With electric vehicles (EVs) connected to the power grid now available, FM Radio Data System (RDS) technology can provide value as a low-cost global solution for EV smart-grid connectivity with various digital real-time data transmissions, such as command-control, information, and advisories. This paper reviews the cooperative work between General Motors and e-Radio Inc. to investigate various concepts with respect to the capability of FM RDS to support such industry standards as SAE J2847/1 and SEP 1.0. This development work has resulted in a fully functional prototype.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"33 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123804318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The feature of high robustness to system structure and parameter uncertainties makes the sliding-mode observer (SMO) a promising candidate for rotor position estimation. In a practical drive system, because of physical limitations, e.g., sampling frequency and computational resource, it is challenging to obtain a perfect sinusoidal waveform for the back EMF by a SMO, especially in high speed range. As a result, the rotor position obtained from the estimated back EMF by using the traditional inverse tangent method will have nonnegligible oscillations. This paper proposes a novel algorithm, which uses the estimated rotor speed as a feedback signal with the conventional back EMF-based inverse tangent method to extract the rotor position. The proposed algorithm can effectively mitigate the oscillation and improve the dynamic performance of the SMO for rotor position estimation. The proposed algorithm is validated by simulations in MATLAB Simulink as well as experiments on a high-power IPMSM drive system.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115620349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EVs are equipped with a drive train that is completely electric powered, with a fairly large on-board battery pack. More recently, EVs have been looked at as distributed sources of energy, whereby they could back up the power grid during critical high demand periods. With the help of an on-board battery pack, EVs can act as distributed generators and feedback energy to the AC grid. However, efficiency of energy conversion could become an issue in this power flow. Hence, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power flow requires a detailed stage-by-stage efficiency analysis, to evaluate practical feasibility. This paper aims at introducing some of the issues in connecting battery-powered EVs to the electricity grid. The paper highlights few of the inefficiencies of V2G connection, especially from the point of view of power electronics converter energy conversion stages, and suggests some research directions for the near future, in order to possibly make V2G a practical reality.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114272100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The current-mode controller is based on average small signal models. The controller consists of two control loops; inner and outer control loops. The inner loop is a current loop controller with slope compensation to force the input current to track the reference current, which is determined by the output of voltage regulator. The outer loop is a PI controller that minimizes the steady state error between the output voltage of the converter and its reference. For validation, experimental results are provided to verify the superiority of the proposed current-mode based Boost converter under 50V/20A load.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115491557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the one hand, using a PHEV means that a part of the vehicle energy comes from the grid or other sources, such as renewable energy, to charge the battery. On the other hand, increasing the number of nuclear and coal power plants to supply these new needs would shift the problem, and will not permit solving the problem of pollution or fossil fuel depletion. The methodology is based on two combined optimization loops: one for sizing the energy sources, using a genetic algorithm, and another one for computing the optimal energy management strategy for a specific driving cycle, using dynamic programming. Results show that the algorithm can find the best sizing of sources for the best fuel consumption, with a 6.5kW fuel cell and a 75Wh battery for the ECE driving cycle and a 9.0kW fuel cell and a 72Wh battery for the LA92 cycle. Compared to results obtained through the mean sizing power method, the algorithm shows that the hydrogen consumption can be reduced by up to 70% and the size of the battery by up to 67 %. The proposed methodology can thus help optimize the sizing of hybrid vehicles used for given driving cycles.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114540738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those parameters allow to adapt the driving cycles to different cycle types (urban, extra urban, highway), length and duration. Other than know drive cycle simulators, the approach is based on normal distribution of velocities and accelerations, thus needing to analyze only few cycles for the initialization.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"938 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123296302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Decentralized power generation and transportation electrification, in particular, are emerging as some of the most effective and promising tools in addressing these concerns. In this article, we conduct a integrated review of microgrid and transportation electrification to emphasize their inevitable interdependency in future developments. We summarize control strategies for microgrid and electric vehicle (EV) technology and discuss the challenges arising from the introduction of EVs into electric grid systems. We also analyze the current electric power market. To improve the grid's efficiency, we study the possibility of EVs performing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) service in order to entirely or partially replace some inefficient components of the current power market. Finally, two future research topics are proposed. First, a smart plug-and-play control approach for the integration of EVs into microgrids is described. Second, an adaptive charging strategy is proposed for the use in microgrids. This could mostly alleviate the stress to medium voltage distribution transformer of a region with a large EV population, without compromising the charging performance and EV owner's interests.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125404733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
