This working paper increases awareness surrounding African textiles, Ghanaian beads and printed textiles from historical and contemporary practice perspectives. Design-based practical experiments were employed in the study using design software such as Adobe Photoshop and CorelDraw in the design process. Data was collected using documentation and observation of Ghanaian beadworks as a source of inspiration. Textile design samples provided examples of reinventing and reinterpreting beads into motifs for prints, that were simulated into respective products. The work recommends that African textiles and fashion practitioners explore the use of heritage symbols and artifacts as sources of inspiration for interior and garment textiles, to promote cultural awareness and symbolism in contemporary contexts.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"527 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120860904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project is inspired by the processes of the engineer Heinz Isler who used textiles as a form-finding medium and subsequently set those forms into permanent structures, using the knowledge acquired during that process to create large scale forms inspired by the maquettes. This project examines how this approach could be explored using a textile design route and incorporating knowledge of the textile design process as both a technical and aesthetic act. The first part uses a collaborative workshop to transform tubular-knitted fabric into small and large sculptural models. These are then recontextualised with a focus on photographic output to present the outcomes as architectural forms. Second, thermoplastic polyurethane yarn (TPUY) is used to create knitted structures that exploit the innate potentials of knitted fabrics when used with heating methods to find forms to create architectural maquettes. These knitted structures are created on electronic Stoll knitting machinery and rely on tacit knit knowledge to create structures that capitalise on the adaptability of the knitting process. This reduces the need for seams or other areas that may cause weakness and allows the creation of both flat and three-dimensional shapes. Using various techniques, concentrations of TPUY and conventional knitting fibres, the project proposes an exciting future application for knitted textiles in the process of designing structures with potential in architecture, engineering and sculpture. Finally, the discussion moves to further potentials for this process in both research and teaching scenarios.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123275745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Co-curated by Rose Sinclair of Goldsmiths and Senior Curator Rowan Bain of the William Morris Gallery, the exhibition is the first major retrospective of significance about the work of Trinidadian-born textile artist and designer Althea McNish. It features original textile design work, fabrics, artefacts, photographs and archival film footage that celebrates McNish’s prolific and vibrant cultural contribution to twentieth century textile design. Exhibits include items from McNish’s personal archive – early sketches and prints from the Trinidad Art Society, through to sample books, swathes of original fabrics from Heals, Hull Traders and Liberty, later paintings created by innovative CAD technology and an interpretation of the 1966 Ideal Home exhibit “A Bachelor Girl’s Room” recreated by Studio NYALI. It highlights the renown in which McNish was held in the 1960s-80s and in doing so, asks challenging questions about why this extraordinary black woman designer – the first designer of Caribbean descent to achieve international recognition – has been so overlooked in recent decades. The exhibition forms part of a three-year research project on McNish’s legacy led by Rose Sinclair and funded by the Society of Antiquaries through its Janet Arnold Textile Award.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123460870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Enabling students to recognise, understand and manage their in-the moment stress can empower them to take some control over their own mental health. This paper focuses on female students. It adopts a mixed methodology approach of experiential learning informed by themes of social and technology acceptance. Overlapping methodologies including “what if…?” scenarios around wellbeing are posed to inspire textile-based concepts as an intervention. The research presents novel approaches and proposes five early design concepts to consider the monitoring, management and prevention of female student stress through the design of crafted, wearer-centred e-textiles. The research is underpinned by both quantitative and qualitative data generated at two female student focus groups. The interactive textile outcomes and playful narratives encouraged student discussion and illuminated wider debate around female student mental health issues. The findings revealed that students are receptive to taking greater responsibility for their own mental wellbeing and open to exploring new paradigms of self-management of stress. The research outcomes built new interdisciplinary knowledge in design practice by exploring the intersections between fashion and textiles, science, technology and wellbeing.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127834685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pedagogy of the textile design studio is characterized by a physical space with appropriate resources for the techniques to be taught, learning through extended practice in that space, collaboration with peers and experts, and critique. Moving a course out of the physical studio space and into the remote learning environment makes the implementation of traditional studio practice and proven teaching methods unattainable, creating extensive challenges. However, the necessity of transitioning studio courses to emergency remote learning also led to innovations in teaching practice and new approaches to achieving learning outcomes. Using case studies the authors analyze the advantages and limitations associated with the transition to remote learning within the framework provided by Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. Through the analysis, the authors bridge in-person and online experiences to identify key components of studio learning in a woven design curriculum. The role of the physical studio environment in helping students progress from understanding basic concepts to creating innovative design solutions is discussed. Due to the commonality of studio-based instruction across textile and apparel design curricula, results of this analysis have application to a range of fashion and textile design disciplines.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125003699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project, funded by Cotton Incorporated, highlights a shift in industry focus towards an evolving emphasis on health and well-being, acknowledging the impact COVID-19 has had on consumer behavior. These consumers tend to be more mindful of the material components used in their products and living spaces and more responsive to materials associated with sustainable development. In light of ongoing pandemic concerns, attention to consumer attitudes may impact design practitioners and design educators. In response to this call to action, the faculty team began examining opportunities for cross-collaboration, which could address a blend of environmentally conscious healthy living through design. Our starting point began with developing a literature review based on a search for comparable methodologies for enhanced textile-based curricular activities involving fashion and interior design. Our findings indicate opportunities where material selection systems may align across disciplines in facilitating sustainability education by empowering students with a more comprehensive understanding of potentially healthier materials. While this initial investigation is occurring in the context of the CTN INC grant requirements, our intention is for multidisciplinary collaboration between faculty and students to continue as standard practice within academia.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131373541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the author adopts a different approach, searching for healing possibilities on the surface of textile pieces made by students at her art studio in Beirut. Using semiotic analysis and emotion theories borrowed from psychology and communication, the author finds that design decisions, from the choice of background to the choice of color and stitch, possess significant healing potentials. This seems true even when the makers live in troubled environments such as the Lebanese capital. The impact of using yarn, hooks and needles in artisanal textile work has been widely evidenced through research. It is time, the author concludes, that the importance of conceptual work, where design thinking is heavily involved, be acknowledged.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123611544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reflects on how the COVID-19 experience reframed our environmentally-oriented workshops to connect mental health and well-being with eco-living. The research aims to find out how making e-textiles forms and a craft-based approach can affect participants’ sense of agency in times of the pandemic and climate crisis. In response to our government’s call to engage with mindfulness to alleviate anxieties induced by the pandemic, we expanded our project to emphasize how slow textile techniques including needle-felting, crochet, and sewing are conducive to contemplative practices. In delivering workshops in-person and online, we discovered how well-being can be fostered through environmental knowledge sharing and interactions in the making process, which lead to a sense of social connectedness. This article discusses the methodological, face-to-face, and online features of the workshops and findings based on observations and survey results. We conclude on how combining the concepts of making things, material thinking, and crafting enhances resilience in the face of the global pandemic and the climate emergency.","PeriodicalId":275893,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128611515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
