Working on batik does not require special space and can use any space. The utilization of space is analyzed by theory of the basic form of space, the nature of space, type of space and productive house. The method used in this research is qualitative method. There are 9 batik workers who become observation units to obtain information needed in the research. There is some space that is used for batik these are kitchen, yard, terrace, dining room, and living room, so batik can be done in public space, semi public and service room but not done in private space because pollution, lighting and natural air still less. Determination of space utilization based on its location close to kitchen, toilet, and tool or materials storage room, no pollution, no exposed to rain splashes, there is space that can use while taking care of children, has enough room. There is no batik space at batik workers' house, which is a place to make batik. Space has sufficient the extent of space required for the process of batik (nyanting). People that utilize the potential of rivers will choose to live on those area by built a shelter on water. This dwelling, by local people, is referred to the lanting house. Dwellers will continue to transform the inside of the lanting house to adjust to the needs and to the conditions of the surrounding environment. This adjustment process creates a pattern of spatial use in Lanting houses on the banks of the Kapuas river in Sintang City. This research is classified into basic research with the scope includes a correlation relationship between the use of residential space and variables in the form of occupants and occupancy. The observation method is carried out to obtained data that related to the use of dwelling on the unit space and space layout. As the results of the study, it was found that there was a transformation in the use of inner-space and outer-space. In addition, it was found also a deviation in the pattern of space utilization in the lanting houses in the Kapuas Riverbank in Sintang City. Deviation found as a result of the adaptation process of residents to adapt to environmental conditions. Deviation of functions that occur in lanting house is found in the terrace, living room, family room, and kitchen area. Deviation of function occurs with the addition of new functions. In island city, Bawean, the wind effect becomes very critical to the identification of environmental adaptation of its dwelling. The aim of this study was to identify the adaptation characteristics of traditional dwelling to the environmental archipelago condition of Bawean island. In this study, two main dwellings as references are the traditional houses, Bangsal or Limas and Barn, Durung. Generally, this research involves two major steps as follows: (1) Identification and specification phase (field observations, measurements) of the characteristics of building performance, (2) Simulation phase of the thermal performance of traditional house (using Ecotect Analysis and CFD Programs). This results highlighted that the houses performance is not optimum, both in spreads and compact orders. Meanwhile, Durung has better performance, only 17% of the samples are in discomfort condition (spread or compact). The optimum condition is achieved when the settlement spread out, otherwise uncomfortable when it is in the dense environment. The houses in daytime conditions are in the discomfort conditions and lower cooling load, while the night-time conditions are in the quadrant of optimum conditions, comfort, and low cooling load.

All traditional houses in earlier phase are uniform because they are erected according to standardized building customs. Availability of cheaper new building materials and practical construction methods have induced Pengotan people to renovate their traditional houses in present architectural style. This research is to investigate the changing process of house form and to which extent these changes have modified traditional building system. Do inhabitants tend to preserve traditional style or adopt recent architecture. The investigation has indicated that traditional bamboo benches are key preconception of space and form design in Bali Aga traditional houses. Layout system of benches inside and outside the house persisted even though the house has endured renovation. Along the way, the tradition of putting bamboo benches in front the house has induced the concept of verandah in the house. Since traditional houses are placed uniformly in a row, the new verandah has created a long open space for leisure and common activities where people have a free visual and audial access to neighbours.
