However, civic and public sector design is still emergent ‒ critical analysis of existing work is scant and there are few sector-level initiatives that seek to support and build the field. Here we present the methods and findings of a 2018 study conducted in New York City which aimed to assess the support requirements of civic and public sector design practitioners and the field as a whole. Data was collected in multiple ways, through desk research, guided conversations with expert practitioners, an online survey, and a project workshop. We highlight the importance of sector support activity and propose practical projects for the field in New York City. Our recommendations cover issues such as organization growth trajectories and funding models. Whilst our focus is on New York, both the research approach and findings are relevant to other places.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115910112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, we describe approaches to image research in which images are not separated from their network, but rather studied en groupe. Here, we contrast approaches that treat images as data, and those that regard images as content. Second, we focus on the production of images for digital research, presenting three of their functions: a) the creation of diagrams that facilitate collaboration in interdisciplinary research teams; b) the use of visualizations for cross-platform image analysis; and c) designing images for public participation. Most importantly, such visualizations are not used to form the esthetic culmination of analytical work, but are rather functional tools for digital research that serve parts of the entire research process, from its formulation and operationalization to the engagement of a broader public.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122175577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This knowledge about perception is useful for our discipline, as shown by the findings of the project Techniques from Magic Applied to Design (TMAD). By studying different techniques used by magicians, this article proposes a new approach to unveil the cognitive processes of people, enriching project methodology in areas such as interaction design, service design and information design. Informing the action, one of the techniques developed, is discussed in depth. By analyzing one type of magical illusion, this technique allows for the natural incorporation of elements into the flow of people’s experience without drawing attention to them.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130024386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Instead of proposing a generalizable set of methods, this experiential account is a tentative systematization of some techniques that have been tested in the lab. Describing them is like annotating an anthology of thoughts and experiments that revolve around the questions of the ‘public’ and its ‘issues’. The techniques are aimed at exploring the social, technical and political issues, collecting their traces, their descriptions and their partial stories, bringing them into a space where they can be questioned. The different techniques are aligned into two epistemic movements, complementing, supporting and expanding the digital methods traditionally used in the lab. The first movement tries to produce a localized representation of the issue. The second one invites the public to get as close as possible to it.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126243972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They emphasize that designers bring unique skills to bear, especially in the design of interactions among people, and that design education needs to change to provide designers with the necessary skills to work in public and social areas. Specifically, designers need training in advocacy for the field, distributed leadership, team dynamics, data collection, and the effective presentation of research results.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115164725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose that through collaboration to achieve a shared outcome, people find themselves in close physical, mental, and emotional proximity. Building a prototype together can also produce a sense of closeness through the shared artifact, which is itself a tangible reminder that cooperation can result in mutual benefit. In that sense, the co-design process serves as a metaphor for the larger process of reconciliation. To ground our discussion, we reference a two-week meeting of 85 people at the International Development Design Summit ‘Building Peace, Reconciliation through co-creation’, which took place six months after the unilateral disarmament of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. One of the designated territorial spaces for training and reincorporation, located near the village of El Capricho in the department of Guaviare, was the venue where former combatants hosted this Summit. We approach the design process using the Creative Capacity Building (CCB) methodology, which promotes design by the intended beneficiaries and users.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114219341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phase one was focused on the question, how could a modified form of technology enable truck drivers to report suspected instances of human trafficking at a higher rate? The collection of primary research was guided by grounded theory with the goal of developing a theory from social patterns to explain why truck drivers were not reporting suspected cases of human trafficking. The study identified three key factors: their fear of safety, the necessity for timely delivery of cargo, and the lack of understanding on how to identify human trafficking. Since these had previously stopped truck drivers from reporting suspected cases of human trafficking, our design goal was to create a reporting process that mitigated these concerns to the point that they could be overcome. That is, reporting had to be anonymous, convenient, safe, integrated into the technology truck drivers prefer to use, ease of use to report a suspected case of human trafficking, and the ability to recognize human trafficking. The first five could be addressed with the Operation Compass smartphone mobile application; the last required an education campaign.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114846695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The argument presented herein is framed in the context of working definitions of cooperation and collaboration; two forms of social interaction based on mechanisms in which parties mutually recognize their intentionality, recognize each other’s agency, and operate under different balances of privileges and obligations. Through the analysis of interactions with adaptive mediators, the paper concludes in four design propositions that subjunctive design language could yield better outcomes when adaptive artifacts foster cooperative interactions, whereas prescriptive ones work better in collaborative interactions. Moreover, it proposes that prescriptive symbolic languages should be preferred when the mediation is about an imbalanced distribution of resources.","PeriodicalId":270818,"journal":{"name":"Revista Diseña","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117127689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
