The hope is to enhance the efficienc of content delivery, e.g., in terms of reliability, availability, throughput, or to reduce the cost of the content delivery platform or to improve the end user experience. While it is easy to point out the benefit of such proposals they usually do not consider the implications with regards to the energy costs. In this paper we explore the energy trade-offs of such P2P architectures, data center architectures, and content distribution networks (CDNs) by building upon an energy consumption model of the transport network and datacenters developed in the context of Internet TV (IPTV). Our results show that a CDN within an ISP is able to minimize the overall power consumption. While a P2P architecture may reduce the power consumption of the service provider it increases the overall energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126726584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many observers regard mobile search as the next new big market. In contrast to search on PCs, however, the provision of search on mobiles is still in its infancy. In order to shed light on the real prospects of mobile search we performed a two-round Delphi exercise with experts, in which we included two innovative elements. First, the Delphi exercise included seven forward-looking scenarios for discussion. Then, the second round of the Delphi was carried out during a workshop with 19 of the original 61 participants involved. In this paper we present the findings from the discussions of this final round.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115421480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new trend in order to address these challenges is to consider the impairments of the lightpaths during the design of optical networks. In our work, we focus on translucent optical networks, where some lightpaths are routed transparently, whereas others go through a number of regenerators. We present a cost analysis of design strategies, which are based either on an exact Quality of Transmission (QoT) validation or on a relaxed one and attempt to reduce the amount of regenerators used. In the exact design strategy, regenerators are required if the QoT of a candidate lightpath is below a predefined threshold, assuming empty network conditions. In the relaxed strategy, this predefined threshold is lower, while it is assumed that the network is fully loaded. We evaluate techno-economically the suggested design solutions and also show that adding more flexibility to the optical nodes has a large impact to the total infrastructure cost.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128150218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of resource allocation in communication networks, a logarithmic form of utility usually serves as the standard example due to its simplicity and mathematical tractability, with the additional nice property that the corresponding social welfare maximization enforces proportional fairness of allocated band-widths. In this paper we argue that recent results from Quality of Experience (QoE) research indeed provide additional justification for such a choice, and discuss several examples. Especially for Voice-over-IP and mobile broadband scenarios, there is in-creasing evidence that user experience follows logarithmic laws similar to the Weber-Fechner Law which is well-known from the area of psychophysics. Eventually, this logarithmic behavior will allow inferring a rather close linkage between subjective user experience, overall social welfare and general fairness issues.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122088260","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different stakeholders are involved, but often neglected is the exact role of the customer, or more specific, his opinion, attitude, drivers or barriers towards these developments. As a consequence, this paper employs a user-centric perspective. It addresses issues such as the effect of giving personalized feedback on energy consumption and refers to studies that have been conducted concerning a possible future implementation of smart meters and smart appliances. Furthermore, it describes an innovative combination of different methodological techniques on the level of energy monitoring and user interrogation. This methodological set-up will allow to gain a clear insight in the willingness of consumers to accept different kinds of measures when it comes to smart metering and smart appliances in their daily life, as to have an efficient user adoption in the future.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131940813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Genetic algorithms are used in order to specify the appropriate coefficients of the corresponding predator-prey competition system, where the pre-paid subscribers hold the role of the predator. The results show that both the postpaid the prepaid subscribers of the area under investigation are in the process of reaching long-run stable coexistence equilibrium. The final postpaid - prepaid market share predictions are 58,8% and 41,2%, respectively.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133997947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a logistic growth model and nonlinear regression based on observations from the year 2002 to 2009, the study estimates that the quasi-subscribers exaggerate the penetration and demand saturation level in the Swedish mobile phone market. This implies that the mobile phone subscriptions will still continue to grow despite the recent high level of penetration rate in Sweden. It also indicates that demand saturation in the mobile phone market should not be forecasted solely on the basis of the number of subscriptions or the number of subscribers. Instead it should be estimated by examining the trend of both, so that the proportion of quasi-subscribers can also be revealed and a better projection of saturation level can be made. Furthermore, future studies are necessary to investigate factors driving the phenomenon of quasi-subscribers as well as to find a suitable business and policy strategy to overcome the potential problems.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127904010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper it will be analyzed how ant colony optimization can be used to calculate migration sequences with minimized costs. Results of our investigation are information about the speed of convergence of ant colony algorithms towards an optimal cost value. In addition, the paper examines whether the off-net price is determined by the size of the Swedish mobile phone network. Two econometric models have been developed to show (a) that incumbents can use size of network together with termination-based price discrimination as a successful strategy to compete with their rivals, (b) that the determinant factors for setting high off-net prices are size of network and method of calculating termination rate. The empirical models use secondary data from the Swedish telecom regulator between 2003 and 2009. The results reveal that incumbents can utilize size of network together with termination-based price discrimination for attracting new customers. Furthermore, off-net prices of mobile phone are significantly determined by size of network and method of calculating termination rate. The bill-and-keep interconnection model should be considered in order to reduce the dominant position of incumbents.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129572206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is increasing the importance of wireless local area (LA) access points (AP) and base stations (BS) residing in indoor locations. Uncertainty exists over who will control this, potentially very valuable part of the mobile service delivery infrastructure and there are many interested actors in position of coupling local area access to their existing platform. In this paper we conduct an analysis of possible Value Network Configurations (VNC) that could emerge around wireless local area access. We construct seven alternative Value Network Configurations by identifying important roles related to wireless local area access provisioning, the corresponding drivers and actors in position of taking on these roles. The identification and description of these configurations clarifies the different possible evolution paths for wireless local area access provisioning and acts as a basis for the design of corresponding future technologies and regulatory policies.","PeriodicalId":269841,"journal":{"name":"2010 9th Conference of Telecommunication, Media and Internet","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123898634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
