MPCA also helps in isolating the batches having higher noise levels than the nominal conditions and the variables that deviate significantly from the nominal traj ectory. Additionally, this paper proposes a novel approach of generating data for building the robust MPCA model based on limited number of batch run data. The paper successfully demonstrates the application of proposed method using data from a milk pasteurization process.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134500062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new algorithm for power system frequency estimation. The algorithm is based on the Hilbert-transform phase-locked loops (HTPLL) and the complex least mean square (CLMS) method. The three-phase voltage data is input to the HTPLLs to obtain an approximate frequency estimation, and a complex voltage vector is formed using an a ß -transform. By then, combining the complex voltage vector and the approximate estimate, the CLMS algorithm provides a refined frequency estimation. Simulation results of the proposed algorithm are presented and the performance of the algorithm is compared to other frequency tracking techniques.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131872045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fuel puddles due to port fuel injection (PFI) and the leakage between combustion chambers are significant sources of efficiency loss and emissions. For most spark ignition engines in production, the emission strongly depends on the air-fuel ratio (AFR) controller in cooperation with a three-way catalytic (TWC) converter. This paper presents a generic observer-based AFR control framework to deal with the high nonlinearities of Wankel engines so as to improve the fuel economy and emissions. By taking the unknown parameters as augmented engine states, an extended Kalman filter is designed to estimate the fuel puddle dynamics using only mass air flow (MAF) and lambda sensors. The complex nonlinear air-filling dynamics are lumped together and estimated using novel observer techniques. A newly proposed unknown input observer is compared with a dirty differentiation observer and then employed in the feedback AFR control design. Comparative simulations based on a calibrated benchmark engine model show that the proposed control can speed up the transient response and regulate the AFR around the stoichiometric value.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"11 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124616193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, according to number of charges/discharges the battery tends to exhibit an aging behavior. An aging battery could restrict the flight capabilities and cause maneuverability problems increasing the risks of collision. In that sense, in this paper a path planning strategy that take into account the State of Health (SoH) of the Li-Po battery for a class of multirotor UAVs is introduced as an optimization problem. The SoH is computed by introduce a degradation model which affects the battery discharge performance, and an optimization problem is defined to find the feasible path between way-points while minimize the energy supplied by the battery according to the present SoH. The path planning strategy is applied to an hexarotor UAV, and the simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132464218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to their inherent nonlinear dynamics, the stability and particularly the current limitation of power controlled inverters represent challenging tasks under grid variations or unrealistic power demands. In this paper, using the synchronously rotating dq transformation, a nonlinear current limiting controller is proposed for three-phase inverters connected to the grid through an LCL filter. The proposed controller introduces a cascaded control structure with inner current and voltage control loops and an outer power controller that includes a droop function to support the grid and rigorously guarantee a limit for the grid currents. Using nonlinear closed-loop system analysis and based on input-to-state stability theory, the limits for the d- and q-axis grid currents are proven independently from each other without adding any saturation units into the system that can lead to instability. Extensive simulation results of the proposed nonlinear current-limiting controller are provided to demonstrate its effectiveness and current-limiting property.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131982145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project focused on the hovering control of a custom-built quadcopter with limited movement along a single vertical post, hence allowing safe operation in a typical laboratory environment, while leaving enough degrees of freedom for useful experimentation with practical PID control laws, which are often disregarded in the educational curriculum of a typical undergraduate control laboratory. The total cost of developing this equipment has been kept particularly low due to the adoption of a modern popular low-cost hardware and software Arduino-based platform and compatible sensors. Interesting future extensions concerning the possibilities offered by this new equipment for teaching, demonstration, project work, as well as research purposes, in the current laboratory practice, are also unfolded.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134359048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Artificial activation of muscle can be achieved using functional electrical stimulation (FES), and enable recovery by facilitating task practice. Signicant clinical research supports the utility of FES for both orthotic and therapeutic purposes, and shows that the effectiveness is maximised when applied concurrently with a patient's voluntary effort. Voluntary effort can be captured using electromyography (EMG), however existing FES control schemes using EMG are predominantly open-loop and fail to provide accurate assistance. In this paper, a model of the dynamic interaction between voluntary and evoked muscle activation is developed, embedding both nonlinear recruitment and activation dynamics. Then an identification method is proposed suitable for clinical application. This enables a model-based, hybrid EMG/FES control scheme to be developed, allowing the dual objectives of tracking and volitional intention support to be optimized for the first time. Experimental results show that the tracking performance of the controller is far more effective compared to previous FES approaches which neglect voluntary action.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122126206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Principal Components methods exploit the Singular Value Decomposition of the open-loop behaviour in order to decouple the control process into modes, offering additional insight in the performance and simple tuning rules for the controllers. Practical implementations of such methods include several factors which increase the complexity of the robustness analysis: i) plant uncertainties, ii) time-varying scaling of the control signals, iii) multiple sampling times of operation, iv) amplitude modulation and demodulation, and v) the presence of additional dynamics introduced by estimation filters. This work offers a comprehensive robustness analysis whereby all the afore-mentioned effects are considered by approximating the open-loop process into a Linear-Time-Invariant system, and it is validated to show that the approximation provides very good accuracy in terms of the dynamics of the original system. Stability results are obtained by using the theory of Integral Quadratic Constraints and a simulation example showing the computational implementation of the stability test is provided at the end of the manuscript.","PeriodicalId":266112,"journal":{"name":"2018 UKACC 12th International Conference on Control (CONTROL)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121401233","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
