This study aimed to compare the incidence of tobacco related cancers before and after implementation of NTCP in India. All the sources which have the statistics on cancer incidence in India were identified and the data was extracted to compare the cancer incidences. Secondary data from the sources such as National Cancer Control Registry, Global adult tobacco survey report etc. were collected and tabulated. The results showed that the usage of smokeless tobacco has decreased to 17.6% in 2015 after the implementation of NTCP from 23.4% in 2005. Same way the prevalence in the usage of smoked tobacco has reduced considerably from 18.3% in 2005 to 11.9% in 2009 after the implementation of NTCP. In Mumbai, the number of cancer patients due to tobacco usage has decreased from 7642 to 3625. But in Chennai, the total number have increased from 2000- 2014. By the analysis of incidence of tobacco related cancers and tobacco consumption in India, it is evident that the usage of tobacco products both smoke and smokeless tobacco consumption have decreased after the implementation of NTCP. Tooth brush manufactures have put forth enormous effort in designing new models to improve performance characteristics. Aim and objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and oral health status among individuals using modified design special tooth brush with beat sound developed to assist ideal brushing technique. Material and methods: The present observational study included 20 study participants of age group between 21 to 45years. All the study participants were educated to use modified special tooth brush with beat sound regularly for a period of 21days and their oral hygiene status were evaluated by using Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S) recorded at regular intervals on 1st, 7th and 21st day. Results: It was observed that all the study participants showed significant difference in the distribution of oral hygiene scores (P < .05) irrespective of gender and majority having a fair oral hygiene status with overall mean score of 2.22 ± 0.3259 slightly higher than previous mean score of 2.77 ± 0.468 (P=.00026) and initial visit poor oral hygiene status mean score of 3.755 ± 0.4796 (P=.04579). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, not taking consideration of confounding factors it can be concluded that modified special tooth brush with beat sound technique show significant difference in the Oral Hygiene Index score of an individual during the observation period thus improving the overall oral health status.","PeriodicalId":265828,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Indian Dental Association Madras","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126400514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of sedation in pediatric dentistry is to reduce fear, minimize physical discomfort and control behavior for dental procedures. The present study was carried out to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices of dental students and practitioners towards conscious sedation. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among 384 dental professionals that included undergraduate, postgraduate dental students and dental practitioners across Tamil Nadu, India. The data was collected through self-constructed questionnaires consisting of 28 questions in English and circulated via online platform on account of COVID-19 pandemic. Every respondent was informed of the purpose of the study and participation was purely voluntary. RESULTS: The mean age of the study participants was found to be 25.99 ± 12.34 years (mean ± S.D) comprising of 184 (48%) males and 200 (52%) females. Majority of the study participants acquired knowledge about conscious sedation through dental curriculum only. About 46.1% considered conscious sedation over general anesthesia for all dental procedures like restoration, scaling, minor bone fractures and minor surgeries, 40.1% preferred midazolam and 78.4% recommend Nitrous oxide sedation as effective technique. Most of the study participants believed oral sedation was easier to administer, required less expertise and skill with minimal or no complication. CONCLUSION: This study reveals lacunae in adequate knowledge and understanding among the practitioners. The result of this study thus provides an insight on need for strategies like incorporating guidelines in dental curriculum, organizing continuing dental education programs and workshops to provide knowledge and incorporate positive attitude among the dental professionals to offer effective conscious sedation in children necessitating oral health care. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) causes significant mortality and morbidity. The treatment options for OSCCs include a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy depending on the final histopathological results. Even with advanced reconstructive techniques, the cosmetic deformity is marked, especially if the lateral commissure of the lips has to be sacrificed, thus compromising on the Oral health related Quality of Life (OHRQOL). Palliative care dentistry is the management of patients with active, progressive, advanced disease in whom the oral cavity has been compromised by the primary disease or by its treatment. This review was based on the purpose to study the Oral Care at Home in post-operative (op) Oral cancer patients. Literature search was done using key words, followed by inclusions and exclusions. The search was based on palliative care in oral cancer and home interventions in post-op oral cancer. Relevant articles were searched from various databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. These articles were assessed by experts. The strong impact of disease stage on the prognosis spotlights the necessity of palliative care in these patients especially as a home care, since most patients suffer from painful swallowing and rely on artificial feeding with Nasogastric tube or have geriatric neuro symptoms and patients might also be bed bound with deteriorating activities of daily living (ADL). Hence, this review highlights the oral care at home in post-op oral cancer patients with future research implications in Palliative Dentistry. Decreased bone height, poor bone quality often limit the use of conventional implants and usually necessitate complex surgical procedures like sinus lift or bone augmentations which are associated with increased morbidity, treatment time and cost. Though the crown root ratio of short implants is controversial, they have demonstrated a high success rate with innovations that have bolstered its effectiveness through the modifications in micro and macro surface topography, surgical bone drilling protocols and implant diameter. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A structured questionnaire survey was done to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of dental implants among the dental practitioners through Google form. Two interviewers with dental background did the study, for a period of 4 months. Questions were structured with close-ended and open-ended questions. RESULTS: 76 participants recorded their responses for this survey. Out of 76 participants, 76.3% of responders were practicing dental implants. Upon assessing the years of experience, 28% of responders with 1-3 years of practice were more interested towards implant dentistry. 63.2% of practitioners had undergone an implant course and the predominant source of knowledge is through books and basic implant course. CONCLUSION: This survey reflects the current scenario of the practicing dentist, who are updating and upgrading to emerging dental science such as dental implants. Those who had less than 3 years of experience displayed more positive attitude towards dental implants.
