System restoration is critical due to difficulties in searching process by the utilities maintenance crew. Usually fault searching methods employed by utilities may lead to different locations to the same fault, mainly if the feeder is dense connected. There have been many approaches in order to overcome this problem. One popular method applies short-circuits indicators to be allocated along the feeders. Nevertheless, their cost can be a limitation for the method. In this context, this work issues the problem of optimal short-circuit indicator allocation along electrical network. The allocation is optimally accomplished in order to minimize the fault searching area of the utility maintenance crew. As the the problem formulation leads to a multimodal discrete nonlinear optimization, a genetic algorithm has been the optimizer tool selected to accomplished it. The technique has been tested on a model of a feeder of an Brazilpsilas Utility. The results showed a significant improvement over ad-hoc methodologies usually adopted by utilities.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129108286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is capable of detecting a selective order of harmonics. This feature is useful where elimination of certain harmonics is of concern. Moreover, the proposed method can successfully detect and track the variations in the frequency and amplitude of the signal and extract the time-varying harmonics. The theoretical analysis is presented and the performance of the method is evaluated by applying it on a shunt active power filter (APF). The methodology is applicable for a wide range of equipment like uninterrupted power supplies, regenerative converters, active power filters, etc.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131076973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When coupled with actuation, this technology could become even more powerful. WSNs have been a buoyant area of study for over a decade. Two research strands have been mainly followed: theoretical and large scale application feasibility studies on the one hand, and small scale, practical deployments on the other, with a large gap lying between these two strands. (For example, theoretical studies of wireless sensor networks have tended to involve highly sophisticated approaches to gathering data from distributed nodes, while practical implementations in industry have tended towards much simpler, point-to-point approaches that minimize complexity.) Given that such theoretical approaches to WSN design treat, by and large, all target applications as aspects of the same problem, subsequent proposed designs are complex and sophisticated. When they form the basis for practical deployments, these designs have to be considerably stripped down for two main reasons: -particular application requirements impose constraints unable to be met by the theoretically driven cumbersome and overweight designs; -much of the technology and techniques taken as given in theoretical designs are neither sufficiently mature nor sufficiently well characterized to be applied in viable, real world deployments.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132382393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the Cartesian position accuracy of the robot is measured using an optical tracking system. Since the obtained results are not satisfactory, the tracking system is then used to correct the position of the robot. Two approaches are presented: in the first one, the relation between the tracking and the robot reference frames is determined and is kept constant during the execution of a task, while in the second one, some parameters involved in this relation are updated at each sampled time of the system by means of a Kalman filter. The algorithms have been implemented in the real tracking-robot system and numerical results are reported in this paper, showing that the proposed solutions clearly improve the autonomous performance of the original system.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132996069","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cascaded solution provides a high number of output levels and high modularity (power electronics building blocks - PEBB), what gives possibility for flexible operation of converter at various high voltage and high power conditions. Several simulation results are presented, which confirm the validity of the proposed approach and possibility to reach high quality of output voltage. Final results are compared with cascade multilevel converter based on H bridge module.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130868735","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Step by step, the proposed top-down methodology based on very high speed integrated circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL) and on Matlab-Modelsim co-simulation is presented. It is used to study and validate the digital adaptation and the architecture implementation of the control algorithm. Modelling, Matlab-Modelsim co-simulation and virtual prototyping are achieved in a unique design environment managed by Matlab computer aided design tools. An application using the proposed methodology was studied: a digital controller for three-phase Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). The power circuit has been modelled in the Matlab/Simulink environment, using the dedicated Power System Blockset (PSB) toolbox. The digital controller is modelled in VHDL code in the Modelsim environment. Then, this VHDL model is imported into Matlab environment and co-simulated using the Link-for-Modelsim toolbox. A high level VHDL model for the controller using real data format has been first designed and validated by co-simulation. Then, an optimized VLSI architecture for the controller using a specific data binary format has been modelled in VHDL code at Register Transfert Level and successfully validated by Matlab-Modelsim co-simulation.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"01 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130434417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a framework for reconfigurable processors that can rapidly identify a reduced set of profitable custom instructions and their area-time costs without the need for actual hardware synthesis. The framework relies on a strategy to rapidly estimate the utilization of the LUT (look-up table) based FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays) for the custom instructions. Simulations based on applications from benchmark suites show that an average area reduction of over 40% can be achieved with only an average performance loss of less than 2% by selecting a reduced set of custom instructions with the proposed framework. In addition, we show that the proposed framework can lead to an average performance gain of over 40% and an average area reduction of over 32% when compared to an approach that exploits the regularity of the custom instruction data-paths for area-efficient realizations.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131736309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Software simulations lead to develop control of the studied system. In this case generally a lot of simplifications are assumed to reduce the computation time. Before a real-time implementation of the control, HIL simulations could be a very useful intermediary step. Thus a hardware device is introduced in the loop in order to take its real constraints into account. In this paper, three different kinds of HIL simulation are suggested: signal level, power level, and mechanical level. A example is given for the traction system of an electric scooter.","PeriodicalId":262939,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126929648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
