This article examines one phase of the social work helping process- assessment when information is sought which will guide social work activities. The interaction of sex, impairment, disability and handicap is examined, and a classification of the various ways disability adversely affects aspects of sexuality is presented. Sexual difficulties can seriously impair a marital relationship and can erode an individual's well-being and vocational competence. This paper will elaborate on the above. Following detoxification, all subjects were exposed to two one-hour orientation sessions (to alcohol as a drug and alcoholism as a disease process). The experimental group received twelve individual sessions (1% hours weekly) specifically focused on their particular sexual dysfunction. The control group received twelve individual sessions (1 % hours weekly) with primary emphasis on their alcohol problems. No specific focus was given to their sexual dysfunction. Obtained differences between groups demonstrated a clear superiority in sexual functioning for the experimental group. Although significant differences were not obtained, the control group had twice the dropout rate of the experimental group. The relationship between sexism and violence in present society is explored, using the concept of abuse as an extension of the power differentials between men and women generally. Attention is directed to the history and types of mechanisms used by the mental health professions, specifically social work, to deny the frequency, intensity, and effects of violence on women. A general overview of recent literature presents new information for the social worker on the incidence and etiology of female victimization and how this new information can be applied to clinical practice and program development. Prior to any serious consideration of this undertaking, it is imperative to examine the literature on the physiology of aging and the sexual apparatus. Psychological and social phenomena do not occur in isolation. In the area of human sexuality, it is particularly important to consider the relationship between the physical and the non-physical. The major portion of this paper deals with the psychosocial aspect of human sexuality and aging. All the literature suggests that this psychosocial aspect is the dominant issue. Unfortunatelv, the published literature offers little organization in examining the psychosocial actions to the effects of aging on sexuality. As a result, this review attempts to categorize the human problems related to sexuality and the elderly.
