Assessing Sexual Concerns of Clients with Health Problems

Abstract

Sexual counseling of clients with health problems which interfere with desired sexual expression is gaining momentum. This article examines one phase of the social work helping process- assessment when information is sought which will guide social work activities. The interaction of sex, impairment, disability and handicap is examined, and a classification of the various ways disability adversely affects aspects of sexuality is presented. Basic components of the assessment process are discussed, as well as considerations of timing and guidelines for assessment interviewing.
