People experience changes in mobility and in bowel and bladder function. Sensory, tactile losses are common and physical independence may be compromised. Protracted hospitalizations and rehabilitation may be necessary to develop or regain physical skills and maximize independence. An extremely important, but often neglected, aspect of any comprehensive approach in the rehabilitation of persons affected by severe neurological disabilities is sexual education and counseling. As with any rehabilitation concern, a sexuality program should be approached in a systematic and comprehensive manner. This paper describes one such approach. Originally developed for persons with spinal cord injuries, this approach has been expanded to serve persons with other severe non-cognitive physical disabilities.","PeriodicalId":262605,"journal":{"name":"Journal of social work and human sexuality","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133153222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet social workers have often overlooked and minimized the extent and effects of this rampant form of child abuse. This chapter will: examine the reluctance of social workers to become involved in treatment and prevention of this problem; describe the extent and dynamics of child sexual abuse; and recommend educational efforts so that social workers in the future are prepared to intervene more effectively on behalf of sexually abused children. These observations and recommendations are based on the authors' seven years of clinical experiences treating sexually abused children of all ages.","PeriodicalId":262605,"journal":{"name":"Journal of social work and human sexuality","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124015674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without professional intervention, these problems are likely to lead to marginal social acceptance, low levels of intimacy, and impaired sexuality development. This paper describes selected cognitive and behavioral implications of cognitive impairments and the influences of cognitive impairments on sexuality. Suggestions for social work interventions are provided to help persons with cognitive impairments develop positive self-images and values, and to help them establish satisfying intimate and sexual relationships.","PeriodicalId":262605,"journal":{"name":"Journal of social work and human sexuality","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131389436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prevalance of sexual victimization is at least as common for people with disabilities as for other people, perhaps more common, particularly for acquaintance rape.
