Abstract

Cognitive impairments, including learning disability, traumatic brain injury, and minimal brain dysfunction, have characteristics that include impulsiveness, communication skill deficits, difficulties with reasoning and problem solving, and impaired self-concept. Without professional intervention, these problems are likely to lead to marginal social acceptance, low levels of intimacy, and impaired sexuality development. This paper describes selected cognitive and behavioral implications of cognitive impairments and the influences of cognitive impairments on sexuality. Suggestions for social work interventions are provided to help persons with cognitive impairments develop positive self-images and values, and to help them establish satisfying intimate and sexual relationships.
