The study was based on the hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between causal attributions and academic attainment of students. The questionnaire on Academic Causal Attribution Scale (ACAS) were administered to 389 students (300 level) drawn from eight (8) Colleges o f Education. Furthermore, students’ Grade Point Average (GPA) was used as measures of academic attainment. Thus, Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to determine the degree of relationship of the said variables. Thus, the findings revealed that there were no significant correlations identified among the causal attribution factors and academic attainment of students except with external attribution of failure in which significant correlation was established with academic attainment. The study therefore, recommends that students should not be reprimanded when they fail examination, instead, they should be encouraged to put more efforts and they should be involved in teaching and learning activities in a bid to encourage them so that they will record success in their future academic pursuit and as well minimize shifting blame for their failure consistently to external factors.","PeriodicalId":262421,"journal":{"name":"Sokoto Educational Review","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126608839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study employed a correlational design to measure the relationship between parenting styles and academic performance. A sample of 380 junior secondary school students during 2013/2014 academic session was selected from public schools through simple random sampling technique. The research instrument used was Parenting Styles Questionnaire (PSQ) which measured parenting styles across authoritative parenting, authoritarian parenting, and permissive parenting styles. The PSQ was validated through content validity and had a reliability coefficients alpha of .800. The second instrument was academic achievement tests in English language and Mathematics which were developed by subject teachers teaching at the SSS level and their content and construct validity were determined by the inspectors in charge of these specialty areas at the Inspectorate Division, Ministry of Education, Minna. The statistical tools used for analysis of the data include mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product Moment Correlations. The findings revealed that there were positive correlations between parenting styles and academic performance of JSS students with correlation values expressed as: Authoritative parenting style (r = .154, p< 0.05), authoritarian parenting style (r = .102, p< 0.05), and permissive parenting style (r = .066, p>0.05). Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that parents should encourage, support and monitor academic activities of children to improve their performance.","PeriodicalId":262421,"journal":{"name":"Sokoto Educational Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130190854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three hypotheses were tested in the study. Descriptive survey research design was used. The population of this study comprised 175 (junior and senior) students of the three existing private secondary schools in Dutsin-Ma. The entire student population was studied.  A self-constructed questionnaire with a four-point Likert scale was used to collect data. The instrument was validated by four health experts. Split-half method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire and a reliability coefficient of 0.67 was obtained. Data collected were analysed using frequency counts and percentage for rendering the demographic profile of the respondents and answering the first research question. The t-Test was used to test the stated hypotheses at level of 0.05. The study found that most of the students (58.29%) consume more artificial sugar than sugar obtained from natural sources. The study also found significant differences in sugar consumption between students in junior secondary classes and those in senior secondary in their consumption of sugar (p< 0.05). However, the study found no significant gender difference in the consumption of sugar among the students. Based on these findings, the study recommended a reduction in consumption of sugar by students particularly unwholesome foods such as biscuits and soft drinks rich in sugar.","PeriodicalId":262421,"journal":{"name":"Sokoto Educational Review","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131099684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
