This becomes particularly significant during the introductory phase of highly mathematical degree programs such as engineering sciences. Thus, based on the example of a fundamentals of electrical engineering course, the authors developed a blended learning scenario which facilitates imparting mathematical expertise within the situated context of this specialist subject. A critical element of this approach is the abundant use of interactive web application-based 3D visualizations. This allows for clarifying complex mathematical problem statements within comparably short periods of time. In this paper, the technical implementation of the web applications using JavaScript and WebGL with their corresponding advantages are described. Additionally, their utilization is discussed with regard to didactic considerations. A questionnaire-based evaluation with respect to students' acceptance of the visualizations and its influence on examination performance was carried out and concluding results are presented.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114668534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

My personal experience shows the big part of the students until the present period do not have learned the teaching material week in week out and just have visited the presentations or simply stayed at home. The situation is unfortunately the same by other subjects too at the university and the colleagues have the same experience from other universities and colleges in Hungary. The learning habit of the undergraduate mechanical engineering students could be followed and analysed if we can see the details of the downloading of the teaching materials. The analysing of the data made possible to draw conclusions regarding the learning habits of undergraduate mechanical engineering students. I analysed the saved data of downloads in the last five years to see the changing of the learning habits of the students if is it recognisable. We can draw the inference on learning habits after analysing the distribution of downloads before the test. The result of the analysing shows the students downloaded the teaching material on the day of test or the previous day. It means these students did not have enough time to read, understand and learn the teaching material before the test and these habits do not have changed in the last five years. The earlier analysing showed the situation is the same in the first semester and the undergraduate mechanical engineering students did not recognise the advantage of the learning earlier before the test. I have found strong correlation between the days before the test and the number of downloads of teaching material. It needs a didactical method to motivate the students to download the teaching material earlier and read it to pass the tests in higher percentage because this learning habit has influence on the results of the successful exams too.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129963040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More and more teachers use them as a pedagogic tool in instruction. This paper describes how a class blog can be integrated into the study of Comprehensive English Course for English majors in China in an attempt to provide an out-of-class space for language practice and for sharing course-related ideas and information. It summarizes the strengths and setbacks of using blogs with out-of-class English learning on the basis of the observation and analysis of the students' blog contributions and their responses to two surveys. This study shows that blogs play a significant role in students' language learning in a variety of ways: promoting learners' sense of authorship, fostering collaboration among learners, producing more interaction among learners and between learners and teachers, producing more comprehensive output, enhancing students' sense of class community. However, setbacks preventing learners from making full use of Blog as a learning tool are also found, such as: online distraction, network speed, blogging topic, online reading habit, etc. To solve these problems, some suggestions are given to tackle them. In all, to make full use of this virtual space for English learning, more efforts and time are needed to be devoted to the blog activities both on the part of learners, and on the part of teachers and school administration.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128322956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technology enabled an interactive environment which, checks student's knowledge and enables continuation to the next learning environment based on decision making criteria to check if sufficient knowledge is acquired by the student for a given learning objective. The system works in such a way, that the decision is made based on three correct answers in a row for questions set in a given area. Our experience shows that establishing interactive environment for online learning helps the students to gain knowledge and skills more easily, and improves the overall understanding and knowledge discovery and construction for the given course.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127635202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper briefly presents the employers' preference for university of engineering graduates. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 301 employers of Malaysian industries and the respondents were restricted to personnel at the higher rank position in engineering industries at Kelang Valley, Malaysia. However, the sample size was small and derived from engineering industries around the Kelang Valley and nearby only. The result indicates that the university background and record were found to significantly affect employers' views on preferences for graduates in job selection. Although accredited universities may not be a primary factor that drew the employers to prioritise their selection, they did not in any way disregard the importance of `well-known university' and Tier category in SETARA obtains by the university. The university should therefore not underestimate the significance of their popularity and the Tier category exercised by Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia. The study shows the university needs to look into their images as well as their graduates' achievement after graduating and minimised any false impression about the image of their graduates. More research should be carried out on employers from other Malaysian industries before any generalisation can be made with any degree of confidence. Future study can also investigate the reasons behind the perception uncovered among the employers for a better understanding of their views.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126218504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
