{"title":"Assessment of Proficiency of English Language Among Senior Secondary Students in Kashmir","authors":"Sabreena","doi":"10.31426/IJAMSR.2019.2.2.1217","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31426/IJAMSR.2019.2.2.1217","url":null,"abstract":"The objective of this study was to investigate the proficiency level of English language among higher secondary students in Kashmir division regarding their nature of the institution. In recent years, English language teaching in a developing country like India, has taken a new dimension. In the era of information technology, communication skills, particularly in English, have assumed vital significance. In order to learn English as a second language and develops proficiency in the language, the student must acquire all the four skills namely speaking, reading, listening and writing. In this study questionnaire was prepared which consisted of two parts. Part 1 was designed to elucidate personal information and part 2 was to illustrate the linguistic data which was designed to test the student’s knowledge of all the four language skills namely speaking, listening, reading and writing. The study reflects that students enrolled in missionary schools have a higher proficiency level followed by private schools and government schools. This is because of the fact that the medium of instruction in missionary and in some private schools is an English language from the beginning while as in the government school's medium of instruction was Urdu which was recently changed into English but did not show worthy results in language proficiency. The making of wayang kulit must pay attention to the techniques and rules contained in each character in the shadow puppet; this is because each character in the shadow puppet has a form in which there are specific symbolic meanings. Sanggar Asta Kenya Art is a non-formal educational institution that teaches about making puppets to students. Sanggar Asta Kenya Art in the learning process does not only rely on theory, but accompanied by skill practice. The steps taken in learning how to make shadow puppets at the Asta Kenya Art Studio are preparing tools and materials, teaching how to arrange shadowing puppets (forming shadow puppets using tatah tools), menyungging (the process of giving color with color gradation techniques) and exposing creatures (giving paint coatings on wayang kulit). The type of research used is a descriptive qualitative research model in the form of case studies data collection techniques in the way of interviews, observation and analysis of documents. The results of the study concluded that the Asta Kenya Art Studio applied the conceptual learning of the wayang kulit and proper procedures. In the learning process of making shadow puppets at Sanggar Asta Kenya Art, the teaching role is vital to facilitate the occurrence of learning processes and outcomes in students.
