High efficiency gyrotrons will require less prime power, which results in significant cost savings and increase in reliability of the power supply. To meet the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) specifications, gyrotron efficiency has to be greater than 50 %. Furthermore, higher efficiency will reduce the collector loading and improve the life time of the tube. Depressed collector operation can enhance the gyrotron overall efficiency significantly. The experimental results from the 1.5 MW, 110 GHz gyrotron with a single-stage depressed collector are presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":254940,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129799618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most popular instability is related to Cherenkov type interaction that takes place when EB moves along a wave propagation direction with initial velocity slightly higher than the wave phase velocity. Such instability is exploited in TWT, Carsinotron and BWO tubes. The basic physical principles of energy exchange are well studied. Similar (but not completely the same) mechanism takes place in diffraction radiation generator (DRG) and orotron where kinetic energy of electrons is transferred to EM field of open resonator (OR) with periodic structure. In these devices energy exchange and self-oscillations may be formally described in terms of interaction of EB with synchronous spatial harmonic of EM field of OR, which is mathematically a travelling wave. However, because of rather different physical nature of the EM fields excited in OR (or any other resonators) one may face qualitatively different picture of EB energy transfer to EM field. In the paper such unusual phenomena are considered theoretically. The results obtained have been approved experimentally for DRG.","PeriodicalId":254940,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129317929","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gyrotron is a new type of high power microwave source, which can generate the peak output power of more than 100 kW in Ka-band. So it is difficult for microwave power propagation with single above rectangular waveguide in this frequency band. In this paper, in order to improve the output capability of peak power for the gyrotron system with single mode propagation, a multi-waveguide output structure is simulated and analyzed.","PeriodicalId":254940,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE International Vacuum Electronics Conference","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127485880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
