The hill of Athens became the arena of the writer’s emotional struggles with himself. Relying on geopoetics and the concept of focalization as understood by Mieke Bal and Shlomith Rimmon-Kennan, the author analyzes the impact of space on the senses and emotions of the subject in a situation of sensory deprivation. She also addresses various themes, important in Poe’s work and evident in the story, such as teraphobia, gothicism and the ideas of Enlightenment. In the course of the analysis, she argues that the way the prisoner experiences and describes the space of the prison cell becomes the focal point for the construction of the literary subject in this short story.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128495238","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the geocritical method, the author examinesthe relationship between characters and things related to this place selected by Białoszewski and the poetics he used. The frequently recurring motif of the wardrobe was juxtaposed with the analys is of inventories andwills belonging to the owner of the manor at the turn of the 17th and18th centuries, which are preserved in The Central Archivesof Historical Records in Warsaw. The main part of the article is devoted to the aestheticsand functions of 18th-century furniture in relation to the context of thecourt culture of that time, which Białoszewski explored poetically. In his works he played out the tension between the covering and uncovering ofthe secrets hidden in the complicated security systems of baroque furniture.This tension accumulates in the spatial nature of Obory: it is a remoteand hidden place. Its location allowed Białoszewski to practice covering, uncovering and recovering the history of the manor. These practices notonly constituted the structuring principle of the writer’spoetics, but they also open up the possibility of following the transformations of places of such semantic complexity as Obory. They allow us to capture the dynamics of changes that often involve inverting their previous meanings, e.g. in the context of agricultural reform, and also help to expose the related conflicts.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117040055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A detailed analysis of Jurewicz’s use of memories allows us to understand Lida as a form which, through literature, heals the relocation trauma and helps one to restore a cohesive sense of self. By referring to the concept of repressed memory of a traumatized melancholic, multiple repetitions and a sense of lost identity, the author demonstrates how important in this process is the ambivalent role of remembering and journaling. Both process place value on childhood as the crucial moment in the author’s life, but they also hinder the adjustment to the new space.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116756997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The editions of Norwid’s ouvre prepared by Gomulicki, especially the first complete edition of the poet’s writings, were published mainly in the years 1944–1989. Undoubtedly, Gomulicki’s greatest editorial success was the full coverage of Norwid’s writings. However, there were also some flaws, such as the excessive “biographisation” of his editorial commentaries, erroneous „Wszystkość nadciąga...” O Gomulickiego edycji kompletnej Pism Norwida – kilka uwag 273 readings and peculiar, in the literary sense, interpretations. Furthermore, Gomulicki marginalised Norwid’s activity in the area of plastic arts (cf. his lithograph Solo). Also his genological classifications and categorisations, which had a great influence on the layout and form of the corpus of Norwid’s writings, raise some serious doubts. Finally, it is also impossible to recognize the critical and scientific character of this publishing endeavour, which Gomulicki willingly and constantly stressed.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134519442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The popularity of the concept of the Great Goddess is analyzed from the perspective of various disciplines: psychology, anthropology, history of religion, etc. The origins of this phenomenon – the great return and vindication of the female deity in culture – lie primarily in the 19th-century literary texts and philosophical essays. The pancultural motif of Magna Mater has already captured the attention of Polish literary scholars, but the research has mainly concerned contemporary works and has concentrated primarily on the fantasy genre. Drawing in particular from the field of depth psychology, the author of the article adopts similar research methods to analyze works from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. She seeks to discover in them the archetype of the Great Goddess, which already at that time began to inspire female and male artists. This resulted in extremely interesting literary creations and motifs, including Polish works.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131032262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The accepted premises for practicing spaceallowed the so-called topographic turn in the humanities. In the presented research concept, we are heading in a different direction, namely we would like to consider the following formulation: poetics precedes geographical experience. Therefore, we introduce the term reversed geopoetics. We assume that the word shapes the landscape and that it is thecause of spatial determination. We chose a void as the essence of our research, in which we perceive the lack of someone or something and wait for potential events. One can consider “nothing” instead of the ubiquitous “something”. We called this thread of thinking, entering a new epistemological area, “thegeography of absence”. In the considerations presented, we used elements of the semiotics of space.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132379695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Next guidebook, Dublin z Ulissesem [Dublin with Ulysses] by Piotr Paziński, concentrates on a specific literary work and invites the reader to explore it with the help of special scenarios. The third, Mariusz Szczygieł’s Osobisty przewodnik po Pradze [A Personal Guide to Prague], is an “authorial guide” which presents a unique personal perspective on the city.
