The author attempts to characterize her writing career after 1945, highlighting its successful turns. According to the author the fact that Gruszecka was married to the famous linguist Kazimierz Nitsch may have had an impact on her work. It also discusses the censorship conducted by the “UKPPiW” office of the new re-interpretations of Romantic literary tradition, which alluded to the stereotypical function of adolescence. The author concentrates on the conflicting attitudes of the New Wave poets and censors. Shmontses – a form extremely popular in the interwar cabaret – drew patterns from Jewish humour. As the relevant cultural context was gradually vanishing, the genre became less frequent on stage. Despite that the pre-war works by Konrad Tom, Ludwik Lawiński and Julian Tuwim were included in the repertoire of cabaret “Dudek”. A sketch referring to the Jewish themes appeared in the show of Television Theatre. It was entitled Cabaret Warietano, czyli XI Muza Juliana Tuwima (Cabaret Warietano, or 11th Muse of Julian Tuwim) and directed by Jerzy Dobrowolski. The leitmotive in the text is the function of the gaze as Białoszewski devotes special attention to the action of looking through the window of his new flat. By concentrating on this apparently prosaic activity, the author of the article reflects upon the ways in which a city can be perceived and lived in. Cieślak","doi":"10.15290/bsl.2021.18.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/bsl.2021.18.01","url":null,"abstract":"The article analyzes texts that represent the artistically diverse literary forms which were written in Polish, German, Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian in Łódź before 1939. The author attempts to identify the constitutive elements of the “Łódź text” (based on Toporow’s typography) and seeks similarities in the ways in which space in a modern industrial city is created in the modernist literature. The space of Łódź created before 1939 is discontinuous, transitory, and filled with its anonymous residents, working masses and peddlers. Łódź, like Manchester, London, Chicago and New York, is a modernist colossal urban space of swindle, extortion and degradation that brings chaos and is impenetrable and oppressive. He analyzes female hodonyms, official forms of commemorating women in Białystok and female dendronyms in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, as well as acts of civic commemorations. On this basis, he discusses trends in local symbolic politics in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and compares them to the ideological assumptions of the Polish policy of memory. The first part of the discussion reconstructs the history of the possibility of creating an animated female being – This thinking goes back to the roots of European culture, in particular the myth of Pygmalionand Galatea, is associated with the legend of a mechanical girl created by Descartes, and came to be especially popular in the nineteenth-century literature, best illustrated byTomorrow’s Eve, Philosophy, especially the mechanicism of Julien Offray de la Mettrie, was also important in the development of the concept of the artificial man. However, the article points out that the title of his main work, Man a Machine, is often taken too literally. The author presents the socio-economic situation of young aspiring writers in Poland at the beginning of the 21st century. He points out the reasons why they decided to work in advertising agencies and how it translated into their literary work. Most of the texts on Peru were written in the years 1928–1933 and were related to the idea of creating Polish colonies for emigrants in this country. The books of Kazimierz Warchałowski, Michał Pankiewicz and Mieczysław Lepecki were propaganda works. Their goal was to encourage Polish farmers to leave, which is why they depicted Peru in an idealized way. There are also texts criticizing the plan of establishing colonies, in which life in Peru is shown more realistically. The exception is Arkady Fiedler’s travel book, in which the author tries to fashion himself as an exceptional traveler-explorer.
