The author attempts to define the components of Żółkiewski’s theoretical habitus in relation to specific trends in contemporary humanities, such as phenomenology, formalism, neo-positivism, idealism or neotomism. Ludzie Poświętnego w listach Henryka Sienkiewicza do Konrada Dobrskiego","authors":"Dorota Samborska-Kukuć","doi":"10.15290/bsl.2022.20.06","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/bsl.2022.20.06","url":null,"abstract":"The correspondence from Henryk Sienkiewicz to Konrad Dobrski from the years 1865–1866 records reflections of the future author of The Trilogy on his one year’s stay as a tutor to the Weyher family (Ludwik, his uncle, and Aleksandra) in Poświętne near Płońsk. There Sienkiewicz met various people. Their identities are established in the article on the basis of hitherto unused archival sources in the form of corrections and factual additions to the 1977 edition of letters. The unflattering remarks about the Weyhers and the guests staying at their house show Sienkiewicz’s critical attitude towards the conformist life of landowners, to whom he gives the worst possible testimony. The text attempts to explain the reasons and contexts of such an attitude of the young Sienkiewicz. The author analyzes three literary works: Zapiski z nocnych dyżurów [Notes from night duty] by Jacek Baczak, Ostatnie historie [Recent stories] by Olga Tokarczuk and Sorge by Aleksandra Zielińska. The article seeks to demonstrate how such categories as affective heterotopia, emotive topography, affective geography and performativity of place can be useful to study the literary landscapes of dying, mourning and loss. The works share the following similarities: the conviction of the cognitive value of reporter’s journeys to the province and the belief in the reporter’s power to intervene in the reality. The author discusses The Wild Blue Yonder(2005), Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds (2020) and Last Exit: Space(2022, directed by R. Herzog, produced by W. Herzog), focusing on three main themes. The first of them is the paradox of confinement in infinite openness. Unlike standard space documentaries, which emphasise the vastness of outerspace and its enormous range of exploration possibilities, Herzog portraysthe deep universe as an area in which humanity is doomed to be confined. The second theme is the confrontation of two possible ways of penetrating the cosmos: in Herzog’s films, the utopian project of interstellar voyages is confronted with the benefits of deep space observations. A good illustration of such interrelations is provided by the memoir of Amos Oz, A Tale about Love and Darkness (2002). The author narrates two stories: an autobiographical essay about the contemporary perspective of the Polish reality and a historical plot unfolding in the border territory by the river Bug in 1941. The author argues that Słowacki shows in the drama the genesis of Poles as a nation which came into being as a result of the bloody conquest of the Venedians by the Lechits. By doing that, the poet uses irony to deconstruct Polish identity based on a sense of injustice and marked by unprocessed trauma. The starting point is the question about what scenarios for crossing the culture of shame are proposed by the literature of peripheral spaces. The article concentrates on the language analysis of the novel and the functions of the gwara (patois), regional dialects, profanity and expressive speech genres. In this way, it draws attention to the flows from the vernacular, home language to the public language, and thus counteracts the marginalization of specific linguistic communities.
