If it was discussed, though, the reason was merely its experimental verse form of the anapaest and the work’s stylistic merit. Aiming to re-interpret Mickiewicz’s poem, the author of the article concentrates on the narratorial voice and the connections between the literary characters (the voivode, his young wife, the lover, and the voivode’s Cossack servant-Nauman). She also underscores the driving force behind the unfolding events. The reading reveals that the characters act upon sudden affective reactions which they can hardly control.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122637435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its integral part is a mental wound of Romantics, whose anthropological and philosophical contexts are presented in the article. The author attempts to establish a set of factors which led to the ethical, social, religious and psychological anxieties of the French post-revolution generations. To that end the author uses various approaches that encompass psychological aspects of different kinds of aggression aimed at God, the world and the self, psychoanalysis as well as philosophy (especially Kierkegaard’s thought). The strong Romantic subject appears to be a lie, and its tragedy resides in the demand for authenticity, which in itself posed too big a challenge for homeless newcomers in a completely transferred reality.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122195841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The reviewer introduces the problematics of the monograph and notices the non-obvious choice of works interpreted by Jarzyna, who is primarily interested in glimpses of the non-anthropocentric perspective in authors not associated with the ecocritical writing. Taking into account various interpretative contexts, the author presents a wide spectrum of issues from the field of animal studies, and she also argues that poetry is both a reflection and a harbinger of changes that are taking place in the collective imagination.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131376329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author concentrates on the events from the writer’s life in Lviv: his work on Słowacki’s manuscripts (Samuel Zborowski and Zawisza Czarny) in the libraries of Lviv, his continuation of the initiative of Romantic followers, including the legacy of Mickiewicz, as well as Górski’s own popularity with the youth. The author aims, first, to identify the work’s references to scientific issues concerning Darwin’s theory of evolution and so-called “social Darwinism.” Secondly, he identifies the novel’s strictly literary references, the citation of which allows him to draw conclusions about the nature of its intertextuality. Of particular relevance here is the relationship of the Galapagos with the biblical myth of the Flood. As a result, the author of the article substantiates the hypothesis that Vonnegut consistently cultivates, for deeply didactic purposes, postmodern metafiction with a moralistic message.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129704114","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author points out that the critical attitude towards European civilization is directly related to the modernist paradigm. Interwar writers-travellers express their views using existing rhetorical figures, treating the modern city as a metonymy of civilization. Therefore, they use simple contrasts, such as culture-nature, disease-health, old age-youth, dirt-cleanliness, etc. They seek escape from civilization on the city outskirts or in places perceived as exotic. Tadeusz Dębicki and Kazimierz Nowak combine anti-civilization attitudes with anti-colonial views, unlike Ferdynand Ossendowski, who, while critical of the situation in Europe, simultaneously expresses his enthusiasm for the actions of the colonizers.","PeriodicalId":253723,"journal":{"name":"Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawcze","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129593083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

According to the author, owing to his gentle nature and predisposition for ill health, out of her six children, he was his mother’s favourite. Tadeusz’s premature death was Konopnicka’s greatest loss. She expressed her despair in the lyric Tu się droga załamała [Here the road has broken], and her premonitions in the novella Dym [Smoke], written a year earlier. Konopnicka’s troubled single motherhood was repeatedly subjected to negative judgement that stemmed from anachronistic worldview.
