It was part of the “scorched earth” tactics conducted by the tsarist authorities, which were supposed to hinder the German army’s march eastward. Using the category of “cultural trauma” formulated by J.C. Alexander, the author seeks to dicover why biezenstwo did not become a part of the collective memory of Poles and how it now functions in the collective memory of Podlasie residents. The research was based primarily on Aneta Prymaka-Oniszk’s reportage Bieżeństwo 1915. Zapomniani uchodźcy [Biezhenstvo 1915. {"title":"Służące domowe we współczesnej literaturze popularnonaukowej","authors":"Julia Wesołowska","doi":"10.15290/bsl.2022.20.11","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/bsl.2022.20.11","url":null,"abstract":"The article offers a critical reading of two popular science works about domestic servants Służące do wszystkiego [Servants for Everything]by Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak and Instrukcja nadużycia [Instruction on Abuse] by Alicja Urbanik-Kopeć. According to the author, until recently domestic servants in Poland were exclusively the subject of academic consideration. At present, the subject has been taken up by popular science literature, which offers the reader a portrait of an archetypal female servant – a young (about 20–25 years old) and uneducated single woman, tormented by life and exploited by “masters”. The author of the review ponders the question to what extent such a portrait genuinely reflects historical reality. She believes that the books under discussion deploy certain historical and literary tropes, which are intended to portray the history of servants and employers in a certain way. Samsel","doi":"10.15290/bsl.2021.18.05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/bsl.2021.18.05","url":null,"abstract":"The article attempts to extend the existing Polish-language research on the semantics of silence in Joseph Conrad’s works, and to interpret this semantics, in the view of the Polish literary tradition, to which Conrad indicated his debt subtly but quite unambiguously (e.g. in an interview with Marian Dąbrowski from 1914). The author highlights the perspective of the so-called Ukrainian school in the Polish Romantic Literature, suggesting that it was from this imagination (more than from Mickiewicz’s) that the author of Almayer’s Folly could adopt specific figures: “the cosmic night” and “the ontological silence”. By referring to the war experience as an element organizing the category of masculinity, the author relies on the works of the German sociologist Klaus Theweleit to analyze the male gaze. The analysis demonstrates that the author draws, among other things, upon songs thatbelong to the tradition of balladry. Apart from references to the songs of Andrzej Garczarek or Jacek Kaczmarski, there are also references to the poetry of Władysław Broniewski, Zbigniew Herbert or Sergiusz Jesienin. The publishing timeline sets the background for the more important focus on the reception of his work. The author of the article discusses the instances of this form of expression used in the utterances of Boleś, a shepherd and country madman of an unknown ontological status. She notices the problems with distinguishing between free indirect speech and the direct quoting of the late titular landlady [gospodyni] with whom Boleś established a strong bond. The original placement and local constraints – resulting mainly from the lack of university and the struggle to establish it – entailed a number of pragmatic transformations: geographical (study and work at German universities), institutional (non-academic employment of the philologists), as well as disciplinary (between classical, Slavic and Polish philology). The study case discussed in the article is the story of Hipolit Cegielski, a philologist turned into an engineer and industrialist. To define the nature of this transformation, the author proposes the category of locomobility (a forced change of location). The text argues that locomobility is a figure of fate of the nineteenth-century Poznan philologists. Kopeć","doi":"10.15290/bsl.2021.19.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15290/bsl.2021.19.01","url":null,"abstract":"The paper discusses the means of presentation within the field of Polish studies of the relationship between Wacław Sieroszewski, a writer and ethnographer, one of the better known Polish exiles in Siberia, and a Yakut woman, Anna Sleptsova. The author contemplates why in the Polish studies their relationship has been omitted, marginalized or hyperbolized. This resulted from Sieroszewski’s own reticence and the cultural taboo, which prohibited exiles from entering into relationships with Russian women.
