This calls for market design options that can cope with the challenges resulting from the ongoing developments. Based on a DC optimal power flow (DCOPF) formulation, this paper analyzes the impact of market design options on the optimal transmission allocation for Frequency Restoration Reserves (FRR) exchange in the Northern Europe power markets. We consider implicit and sequential electricity market clearance options and assess the findings according to the total costs, optimal transmission capacity allocation, and regional FRR procurement. The results show that, as a result of increased market efficiency obtained by applying the implicit market clearance option, it is less expensive, and results in comparatively lower transmission capacity allocation from the Nordic system to the interconnected regions.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129242575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the mid and long term, storages will be one option to deal with the reduced flexibility from conventional power plants to ensure coverage of demand. While conventional generation has mostly given marginal costs and an associated “merit order” in the supply stack, the value of the storage content changes during storage operation and so does its position in the supply stack. Based on an analytical approach for solving a linear energy system model, the key aspects of the changing operation modes of storages and implications for the refinancing of investment costs are investigated. This is highlighted for a selection of case studies including pumped hydro, Li-Ion batteries and power to gas as storage technologies.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126336088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent research embeds the uncertain nature of renewable sources by modelling electricity markets as a two-stage stochastic problem, co-optimizing day-ahead and real-time dispatch. In this framework, we introduce a bilevel model to derive the optimal bid of a strategic wind power producer acting as price-maker both in day-ahead and real-time stages. The proposed model is a Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC) that is reformulated as a single-level Mixed-Integer Linear Program (MILP), which can be readily solved. Our analysis shows that adopting strategic behaviour may improve producer's expected profit as the share of wind power increases. However, this incentive diminishes in power systems where available flexible capacity is high enough to ensure an efficient market operation.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116698268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The price elasticity of customers settled according to two zonal tariff was determined using standard load profile of customers published by regional distribution network operator. The costs associated with the applied mean of demand side control were identified and the tariff effects assessment were made taking into account the benefits reached by energy supplier and network operators forming together the considered tariff offer. The analysis presented enabled to formulate some recommendations concerning TOU residential tariff restructuring to improve its feasibility and to create possible prospective income in result of peak load reduction.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121375545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We model each of the DSR programmes with configurations and assumptions appropriate for the UK energy industry. This enables us to compare carbon emissions between the business-as-usual (BAU) and the smart intervention applied, thus deriving carbon savings. Standby diesel generators are the main intervention for most of the DSR programmes. Carbon emissions of standby diesel generators are compared with the BAU solution. Whether such a DSR produces carbon savings or not depends on the scale and operational policies of the interventions.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125246721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With conventional power plants exiting the market, the provision of ancillary services (AS) by renewable power plants is gaining in importance. Offshore wind farms (OWFs), having a relatively stable feed-in, seem particular suitable for the provision of negative control reserve (down regulation of power). This paper quantitatively assesses potentials for additional OWF revenues and system cost savings coming with the participation of OWFs in the German negative tertiary control reserve (TCR) market. The analysis is conducted with a market model which uses the historical situation in 2013 as a basis and forecasts market conditions at higher penetration levels of offshore wind. The paper shows that OWFs can generate revenues and save system costs on the market for negative TCR, which is true at low, but also at high penetration levels of wind. The quality of wind speed forecasts is pointed out as strong determinant of OWF revenues and system cost saving potentials. We investigate the key market barriers in distinct case studies and we show which market design changes could substantially increase the attractiveness of the negative TCR market for OWFs by adding flexibility to the market and reducing market barriers for fluctuating energy sources.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131379436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose we introduce the “Gas Market Model (GaMaMod)” that represents the European natural gas market within a bottom-up approach. In order to analyse the European gas supply, we look at two main scenarios for the year 2025 with regard to an extension of LNG import capacities and an increased exploitation of European shale gas. Within the scenarios, we modify the basic conditions with respect to the level of demand and present the supply mix in the European gas market. Our results show that LNG and shale gas have an effect on the diversification of gas supply, but the effect is quite limited and main European gas suppliers, especially Norway and Russia, will still remain dominantly in the European gas supply.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134445997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regional Initiatives were thought as a bottom up approach aiming to speed up the integration of electricity markets in Europe by complementing the top down approach of the three Directives. They were successful in creating regional submarkets using market coupling or splitting. This paper investigates differences between European electricity submarkets and assesses the level of integration within and between them. We find four regions with high degree of correlation between electricity prices: CWE, CEE, NordPool or the MIBEL. Moreover, there are now signs of convergence between regions too. Regional interconnections can be the key to a successful integration of markets.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123178503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
