The authors describe and validate the optimization technique used by the Aggregator to enable demand flexibility in domestic microgrid premises. The microgrid is comprised of Distributed Generation and shiftable load devices. By applying a monetary incentive signal in the microgrid's Energy Management System, the Aggregator empowers a change in the load profile, which signifies the potential of this concept in future electricity market and grid applications.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129113848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The typical approach employed by Gencons to address their trading strategy is to simulate energy and service markes under uncertainties to characterize the probability distribution of the future income and, then, optimize the company portfolio to maximize its certainty equivalent. However markets modeling and simulation is a big challenge due to both bidding and clearing rule and dependency on parameters that are difficult to predict, e.g., GDP growth, demand variation, entrance of new market players, as well as the structure of transmission grid. On this regard Italian transmission grid is about to change, specifically a new T-line between Sicily and Continent is going to be operated. So there will be a substantial change both in Sicilian zonal price and in the PUN (single National price for bid). In this article we describe the developed simulation tool of the Italian day-ahead market according with the last rules of the Italian market. This model has been tested extensively against real market data. The results about specific days are reported and the errors evaluated. Then different scenarios have been simulated, such as: flow rate of the global connection between Sicily and the Continent (from 250 MW to 1000 MW with steps of 250 MW) and the effect of the abolition of the single buyer (named Acquirente Unico - AU).","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121459198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Smart buildings play an important role in achieving these goals. With an increased number of measuring and controlling tools, new problems also arise, such as their economic and environmental impacts, juxtaposed to the levels of savings achieved by them. This research investigated the impact of home automation on electricity consumption, related CO2 emissions and costs. A smart building model with its appliances and different number of inhabitants was used along with eight electricity contracts and four different technology systems deployed. The results showed that a fully deployed automation system may be counterproductive, as the electricity need of the system may exceed the savings achieved by it. Therefore, a careful selection of the appliances to be used should be performed.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128701978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, short-term forecasts have become increasingly important since the rise of the competitive spot electricity markets. A two-layered model is introduced for forecasting 7-days ahead hourly electricity price values of electricity spot market. Due to the importance of improved analysis of spikes for risk management, price segmentation into normal range and price spike module is applied. Price spike module consists of two segments: obtaining the probability of price spike occurrence and predicting the value of price spike. To avoid reliance on a single classifier, the compound classifier is proposed in the paper, which combines three individual classification methods: a support vector machine (SVM) classification, decision trees (DT) and probabilistic artificial neural network (PANN). The k-nearest neighbors algorithm (k-NN) is applied for the price spike value prediction.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130782956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model is based on System Dynamics programming and simulates both new investments in electricity generation or demand-response and decommissioning decisions over several decades. The addition of a capacity mechanism under the form of capacity obligation is compared to the energy-only design with or without price cap. Two macro-economic scenarios are computed to study the effects of implementing a capacity obligation. The results underline that loss of load expectation is reduced with the addition of a capacity obligation compared to the energy-only case with a price cap. This is achieved through an increase in investments in peaking units including demand-response. Moreover, an efficiency ratio shows that a capacity obligation is more efficient to address capacity adequacy than the energy-only market with scarcity pricing.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125504140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results have generally been hailed a success by policymakers, but the auction design is still likely to evolve as the results of the first auction are assessed against the policy objectives. With 2.6 GW of new capacity securing 15-year contracts and 6 GW of existing capacity exiting the auction, an area of particular interest may be the contract lengths available for different types of participants. At a time when Capacity Remuneration Mechanisms are being considered across Europe, the design and outcomes of Great Britain's capacity market are being analysed with great interest and can provide important lessons to policymakers across Europe.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128817741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Storage systems allow the decoupling of consumption from electricity generation and therefore have the potential to change the daily demand profile seen by the network in a significant way. This has far reaching consequences for many stakeholders, as changes in the net demand would for example impact electricity prices or change the requirements for peak generation. The developed approach considers the installation of storage devices to increase self-consumption of locally generated electricity in a residential and small commercial end users context as well as its application for electricity arbitrage. Assumptions about their implementation on a system level are described and their impact on overall electricity demand is determined considering the German case.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125893978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By 2030 targets renewable power in the European market should be at least 27% of the EU's energy consumption. This major change will require the deployment of flexible technologies to ensure stability and security of supply. In this paper we study the role of electricity storage and renewable power curtailment as possible options in providing flexibility when high shares of renewable enter the system. We simulate the Italian power market with a power dispatch model developed in GAMS. Our results for the benchmark scenario show that increases in shares of renewables are associated with increases in the demand for flexibility. When we add one storage plant in three zones at a time - SUD, SICI, NORD - demand for flexibility, respectively does not change, reduces and increases compared to the benchmark.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126412830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To predict the alteration of spot prices in situations with high supply of renewable energies, it is essential to understand the interaction of intermittent renewables and thermal generation in combination with additional storage technologies and flexible demand. Therefore, the impact of the latter mentioned flexibility measures is analysed by adding them exogenously to a fundamental price model based on perfect competition. By demonstrating the general feasibility to model price-setting by flexible demand, it can be supposed that spot markets are likely to maintain their synchronisation function in the future. Nevertheless, the results from different sensitivities also reveal further challenges in assessing future electricity spot prices.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127272765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
