This paper presents a method of congestion management for low voltage feeders using indirect control from the smart grid demonstration EcoGrid EU, where five minute electricity pricing is sent to demand. A method for forecasting demand and generating prices in a market framework is presented, and a novel mechanism to ensure prices are fair to customers who can and cannot participate is developed. The proposed market is currently being used to send prices to 1900 houses, with a virtual feeder of 28 houses receiving congestion pricing. Simulations are used to calculate the cost from using this congestion management method, while demonstration results indicate that congestion can be managed successfully.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121879027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transmission systems operators contract some of these services at minimum cost in competitive markets. This is the case of the secondary reserve market (SRM). Besides the day-ahead market (DAM) generating companies, aiming at maximize their profits, can increase their revenues by selling available capacity in the SRM. This paper presents the solution of a price-taker generating company, owning a pumped-storage hydro (PSH) unit, acting in DAM and SRM. The results were obtained for three case studies: the generating company acts only in the DAM; the generating company acts in both markets with a fixed pumping capacity of the PSH unit; the generating company acts in both markets with a variable pumping capacity of the PSH unit. Results show that higher profits are obtained when acting in both markets with a variable pumping capacity of the PSH unit.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122639450","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explain why ESS increase flexibility of power systems and energy markets and why more flexible systems and markets are desirable, particularly in a context of high integration of variable renewable energy sources (RES). The Dutch electricity markets are introduced as the case studies. As opposing to the existing literature, we focus on implementation of a dual technology ESS, which we believe is more beneficial than a single ESS. To show this, we introduce an optimal control model, in which the goal is to maximize the revenues of the dual technology energy storage system applied into two different energy markets, assuming the selling and buying electricity prices are exogenous. Subsequently, we introduce our model, using a simple strategy and present its results, showing the impact of the devices nominal rating on the potential revenues.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126244834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is performed in light of the pending offshore gas discoveries and the world's falling oil prices. The methodology used in this research is based on a probabilistic approach through the development of an integrated energy-economics appraisal-model that uses a probabilistic Fuel Demand Module (FDM) which is derived from a traditional production-costing approach. The developed energy model is interrelated to an investment feasibility model used to assess the financial feasibility of the terminal. This two-folded paper provides a proposal to concatenate an FDM to the traditional probabilistic production-costing model, which is an effective tool for the financial appraisal of a typical fuel infrastructure. The other fold is the technical and commercial aspects that are considered advantageous to the country's policy makers.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126763022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the course of the gap analysis the expected limits of DER hosting capacities were identified. The method for developing and simulating the different scenarios is following a state-of-the-art approach. Results for each power grid and scenario are addressing specific KPIs. The main goal of this analysis was to assess the current EV and PV hosting capacity of existing low voltage and medium voltage grids and identify the factors which limit this hosting capacity. It is shown that European DSOs share similar structures. Depending on voltage level and topology type, specific KPIs were violated by increasing numbers of RES or EVs. Indications for synergies between PV and EVs could be identified due to an increased hosting capacity in the extra PV scenario.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126841625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present several projects are performed investigating the vehicle-to-grid concept in terms of technical and economic feasibility. Numerous papers in the field of electric vehicle integration exist in national and international research community. It is difficult to compare the contents of these papers because of the different energy supply system and energy markets. Therefore this paper analyses and compares various approaches to integrate EVs into the energy market. The analysis includes worldwide scientific results. This examination results in a qualitative as well as a quantitative evaluation of vehicle-to-grid concepts. The results support two targets. First, the evaluation is used to identify the most feasible business case in terms of technical and economic market integration of EVs. And second, the business case is adapted to the German energy supply system and energy market. A detailed description of the German business to integrate EVs is given. Thereby this paper lists and explains the requirements to launch EVs successfully.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"42 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122851792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our results only partly confirm those obtained by Skytte (1999) for the Oslo area. In the Italian case, regulating power prices follow spot prices and, in some cases, they are two or three times larger than the latter ones. We generally observe that the amount of regulation does not affect regulating power prices, even if they actually behave differently to up- and down-regulation. In addition, we find empirical evidence of very high premia for readiness with different behaviors according to Italian zones.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125602593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose to use a Factor Averaging (FA) method, which is based on a principle component approach. This methodology allows to extract information from a large panel of forecasts and helps to solve two important issues: collinearity of forecasts and common bias of different predicting methods. The empirical performance of FA and other forecast averaging methods is evaluated using the data describing the UK market. Twenty four individual methods are used to calculate one day ahead forecast of 48 hal-hourly prices. The outcomes prove that FA is more efficient in terms of the RMSE than other forecast combining approaches. Gains from using FA varies between 8-20% when comparing the average daily RMSE and between 1-40% when individual half-hourly periods are considered.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126913768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
