A shorter period including the allowances market creation in Europe is also accounted (2005-2013). The empirical findings reported in the paper reveal that electricity and fuel prices are non-stationary and cointegrated series. As such, the present paper accounts for cross-section dependence when analyzing the electricity-fuel nexus. The results of this study indicate that there exists a stronger long run equilibrium relationship between electricity prices and fuel prices in the industry sector. These differences may be explained by the industry higher resilience in long run contracts within the energy sector.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115910555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The demand for these balancing options cannot be assessed separately since they influence each other. Therefore, a model was developed to analyze these mutual dependencies by optimizing a concerted use of balancing technologies. This model is presented here. It covers the European electricity system in hourly resolution. Since this leads to a large optimization problem, several options for reducing system complexity are presented. The application of the model is illustrated with a case study outlining the effects of pumped hydro storage and controlled charging of electric vehicles in central Europe.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115710830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis suggests that while demand response aggregators operatively lead the ecosystem, the regulators hold a central role in both the birth and sustainability of the ecosystem through their authority in setting market rules and performance requirements as well as in their control of the demand response program funding mechanisms. Moreover, an analysis of the distribution of economic value generated by the ecosystem indicates that only a minimal portion of the value surplus accumulates to the ecosystem's operative customers (NYISO and utilities), which suggests that they may have only limited incentives to support the growth and sustainability of the business ecosystem.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124406221","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, Demand Response programs provide mechanisms to regulate the power demand through load control according to conditions of the supply side, where consumers can efficiently schedule the operation of their appliances. This paper has proposed an efficient local load scheduling optimization strategy for residential multi-class multi-constraint appliances by shifting and interrupting load requests to flatten the aggregated consumption. One scenario for each smart house, including the desirable usage schedule of its appliances in a 24-hour period, is considered. The proposed strategy has supposed a time-independent constant electricity consumption threshold, imposed by the grid stability management, in each time interval. The demand response system attempts to optimally schedule the received load requests over time, aiming at flattening the aggregated consumption meanwhile, maximizing satisfaction of consumers. The results have indicated that decreasing the electricity consumption threshold up to 60% of the maximum peak demand results in significant aggregated consumption flattening and also admissible delay in appliance reception.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127098539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we present a methodology to assess the impact of the achievement of such targets on the development and on the operation of the power system, to determine the necessary investments on infrastructures by means of a cost-benefit analysis based on simulations and to estimate the effects on the electricity cost. The methodology has been applied to the Italian case by RSE, starting from a scenario, developed by ENEA, where the Italian energy system in 2030 achieves a 36% reduction of CO2 emissions compared to 2005 levels, in line with the EU targets. Using s-MTSIM, a simulation model of the Italian power system developed by RSE, the main criticalities (congestion, overgeneration, energy not supplied, etc.) have been identified and quantified. Then, the measures to upgrade the transmission and distribution networks and to increase the flexibility of the generation set, needed to mitigate the impact of such critical issues, have been valued on the basis of a cost/benefit analysis. Finally, the amount of the investments needed and the impact on electricity cost for end users have been estimated.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125822119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The financial contracts enabling risk management of basis/area risk are called electricity price area differentials (EPAD). We study how the underlying commodity, area price difference (area price minus system price), reacts to new information on spot (Elspot) and futures (Nasdaq OMX) markets. We evaluate what are the short-run and long-run dynamics between the two markets, and whether either of the two is more informationally efficient. The results provide electricity market stakeholders with implications on whether EPAD contracts provide adequate and valid pricing signals for the underling area price risk.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115030873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Batteries are an option for such provision. Within this paper the cost structure differences between generators and batteries providing PCR are discussed. The latter is simulated in detail to quantify its costs. A battery system providing 1 MW of PCR is proposed. The system needs a nominal power of 1250 MW to maintain its state of charge. It was found that energy costs for corrective measures are much smaller than degradation costs for the battery system. The cost comparison between conventional power plants and the battery system shows significant differences in magnitude and dependencies to the wholesale markets. New competitive participants in the market can have important effects on today's providers and future PCR prices.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122022628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article presents an econometric analysis of factors influencing demand and supply of wood pellets in the residential heating sector in Austria. Time series data on prices, quantities, imports and exports between 2000 and 2014 are used in a two-stage least squares (2SLS) regression. Pellets demand is found to be inelastic (-0.67) and pellets supply unit-elastic (1.16). Thus, consumers are highly exposed to price changes resulting from supply shocks.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130391743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to assess the potentials for revenue and impact of a profit-maximizing storage unit on market prices in the day-ahead electricity market. It also analyzes the impact of a storage unit on market performance of conventional generators. A bilevel profit maximization model is proposed in which the upper-level problem is a storage operation and bidding decision problem, while the lower level problem simulates market clearing. However, the decision of the European Union to tighten climate policy has introduced new goals for the energy supply industry. In such reality, energy mix has to provide not only electricity at the lowest cost, but also to fulfill the international climate and political requirements. In light of the newest EU CO2 abatement targets and RES objectives, planning the energy mix has become much more complex. Volatile generation of RES increases the need for the fast reacting power system reserve. As a consequence, long term energy mix optimization, cannot rely on general requirement on the system reserve. It is necessary to consider particular category of reserve in the Generation Expansion Planning model: primary, secondary and tertiary. The paper focuses on linking energy mix optimization (long term planning) with the requirement of adequate power system flexibility (short term planning). The presented methodology for energy mix optimization, taking into account abovementioned issues, is illustrated by a case study for Poland.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120953540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
