Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) - an option that reduces the volume of gas about 600 times allowing for transportation by ship - has created an opportunity for expansion of the international market for natural gas. Pipeline option shows cost competitiveness for short to medium distances and for inland destinations, but it suffers from geological and political constraints. LNG provides an option to diversify supplies and we here we assess the LNG prospects for the next decade. The LNG trading volumes are projected to increase from about 240 Mt LNG in 2013 to about 340-360 Mt LNG in 2020. Longer-term projections show a potential for a substantial growth of LNG, but the challenges exist due to a potentially weaker demand from Asia. On the other side, geopolitical tensions might increase LNG flows to Europe.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127715022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As deterministic methods cannot take into account the uncertainties inherent for renewable generation, we propose a probabilistic power flow method for the assessment of uncertainties using Monte Carlo simulation. A general overview of renewable generation uncertainty is presented, and the proposed method is tested on an actual Slovenian electric power distribution system. Here, two smart grid approaches are used - smart energy storage and topology switching in order to improve power system operation. The results of the proposed approach define the probability distribution of power flows and voltages, which may help the operator to take the uncertainties of renewable sources into account during daily operation, or during long-term system planning.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126285713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimization problem consists of both technical and economic aspects regarding network, DGs and BSS characteristics and restrictions. An enhanced mixed integer linear programming (MILP) method is applied to solve the unit commitment and economic dispatch problem. The proposed tool is able to attempt different strategies for fixing voltage violations and reducing losses in the grid on top of performing optimized scheduling of DGs and BSS. The functionality and effectiveness of the proposed approach is evaluated by selected case studies in the end. Results indicate that the tool can find promising solutions for highly constrained problems during microgrid operation. Finally, a comparison and validation effort against another optimization tool based on genetic algorithm will be executed.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125639428","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We claim that successful design and implementation of these measures will be achieved by understanding of households electricity consumption patterns using high resolution data from smart metering coupled with the knowledge on socio-economic details. For that purpose we analyzed daily off-peak and total electricity consumption for 2011-2013 from smart meters of 250 households in the city of Évora, for which a 110 questions door-to-door survey is also available. We concluded for significant variations on electricity consumption among different consumers' profiles, following specific socio-economic characteristics. We estimated 12.7MW of PV potential for auto-consumption based on segmented daily minimum consumption. Acquired knowledge can be used to target energy consumption reduction policies and optimize self-consumption capacity investment costs and electricity production surplus.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131138255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

District heating (DH) with highly efficient Combined Heat and Power (CHP) production covers about 90% of heating in larger cities in Finland. We created a model with an hourly resolution, where the power plants are dispatched in the cost optimal order according to representative fuel prices and electricity spot market prices. We explored the impacts of external producers on the system operation and possible system cost savings induced by allowing external producers to provide their waste heat to the network, simulated by 20 MW waste heat production of a large metro and shopping centre. Similarly, the impacts of a large solar heat plant (5 MW) were simulated. Our results demonstrate that open heat market could be beneficial for all parties and that significant cost and fuel savings are possible with mutually beneficial business models.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127831117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To enable detailed national results for the European electricity system on a sub-national level for Germany and Greece, an approach is developed to implement many technology specific classes of RE potentials for small subnational regions into an optimization model for the European electricity market (RESlion-Europe). The RES potentials for wind onshore and photovoltaic (PV) are evaluated by using a geographical information system (GIS) to integrate specific information about land cover, weather data and specific land use of each technology. By defining five different weather classes per model region, an improved site selection for RE power plants in the optimization model is possible. With this approach, modeling results for the European electricity market are constrained by suitable land for RES, regional hourly weather profiles and distributed electricity generation from RES.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129776148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, different concepts for an efficient facilitation of the market and utilization of the transmission grid are implemented in the regional markets created by the Electricity Regional Initiative. One example is the implementation of the flow-based Capacity Allocation in Central Western Europe for the cross-zonal day-ahead electricity market. This will be a major step towards a reliable physical reflection and an efficient usage of the grid. This is one of the intermediate steps to cope with the future challenges. Transmission System Operators will face an increased volatility and intermittent generation, increased liquidity and new methodologies in the intraday markets which call for sophisticated procedures. This paper introduces a concept which focusses on a market based intraday allocation for cross-zonal trading of electricity.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130089594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Portuguese market is a natural setting to measure the effect of intermittent renewable generation on electricity prices, as the share of wind in total load demand is one of the largest in the world. Using daily data from 2007 to 2014, we estimate an ARX-EGARCHX model where wind generation and total load demand enter as exogenous explanatory variables for the electricity price. The results show that wind generation reduces the average price level, while it increases the price volatility. Both the mean and volatility effects are substantially stronger for day-time peak prices than for night-time base-load prices.","PeriodicalId":252103,"journal":{"name":"2015 12th International Conference on the European Energy Market (EEM)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129089796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
