Nursing education should focus on cultivating students’ performance of caring behaviors to maintain the patient care that is a hallmark of this profession and guard the health of patients. Nursing teachers must understand the factors related to the performance of caring behaviors in students. This knowledge can serve as a reference for the development and teaching strategy of a nursing program. This qualitative study aimed at understanding the factors affecting the performance of caring behaviors by nursing students. This qualitative study was conducted at a science and technology university inNorthern Taiwan. Convenience sampling was used to collect 40 reflective journals from 20 nursing students at the five-year junior college as the study data. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. This study found two themes related to caring behaviors in nursing students: perception of nursing students and inter-subjectivity with patients. The beliefs and perceptions of students are closely linked to their performance of caring behaviors. Greater awareness in nursing students will improve their performance of caring behaviors (e.g., the concept of nursing care, ability to care, empowerment, learning by imitation and inter-subjectivity with patients). Results of this study could serve as a reference for program design and clinical practicum instruction for nursing education, to improve caring behaviors in students.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129421697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through an e-mail questionnaire, the gifted science students, now attending universities, gave their opinion on the value of the chemistry experiments and the laboratory notebooks they wrote in their high school days. Based on the correlations between the students mid-term scores and their chemistry experiment laboratory notebook scores, the students were divided into four groups and one student from each group was selected for a semi-structured telephone interview. The results of the study revealed that the MAA scores and chemistry LNR scores are more correlated than the MAA scores and chemistry HGS scores and the students from every group felt that they gained a better understanding of experimental procedures and data analysis by doing laboratory experiments. All of them think that completing the chemistry laboratory notebook in science high school and university is very useful for studies in advanced chemistry.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123373013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the study was to investigate whether incorporating direct instruction of academic formulas (DIAF) into an academic writing class would encourage the use of the target academic formulas (TAF) in the post academic essay writing (AEW) test, and improve the subjects’ academic writing performance. Two intact groups of diploma level university students enrolled in an academic writing course employing a process-oriented writing approach participated in the study. Both groups consisted of forty students and were assigned as the experimental and control groups. DIAF was incorporated into the existing academic writing course’s syllabus and was conducted two hours per week over six out of the fourteen-week semester. Pre and post AEW tests were used to assess the subjects’ academic writing performance before and after the treatment. The results of the study are discussed by addressing three research questions: 1) What are the effects of DIAF on the TAF use in the post AEW test? 2) What is the effect of TAF use on the post AEW test scores? 3) What are the effects of DIAF on the subjects’ academic writing performance? It was concluded that DIAF encourages the use of more TAF and a more varied selection of TAF in the post AEW test. There is a significant but weak positive linear relationship between the number of TAF used in the post AEW test and the post AEW test scores ( r =0.473), and the number of TAF used is a significant predictor in estimating the scores for all the three AEW test components. DIAF is also beneficial at enhancing the subjects’ academic writing performance with a large effect size of 0.98 for ‘language’ component, 0.86 for ‘organization’ component and a small effect size of 0.45 for ‘content’ component.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"650 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132127492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative approach to the analysis of the data was employed. Eighty seven teachers took part in the study, and four questionnaires were designed to explore the responses of the teachers. The focus was on variables, algebraic fractions, equations and word problems. The study revealed that some of the teachers were successful in understanding students’ thinking with regard to the algebraic concepts studied. The study also indicated that most teachers ask instructional questions instead of investigative questions. Most teachers were incapable of asking questions which would reveal students’ source or cause of misconception. Another important finding was that some of the teachers had difficulties in understanding the problems, hence could not figure out the students’ misconceptions or errors in the hypothetical solutions given in the questionnaires. The teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge was generally inadequate.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134590229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chaos theory is the qualitative study of unstable periods in deterministic nonlinear dynamical systems, chaos theory looks at how things evolve. Fractal geometry is a subject that has established connections with many areas of mathematics (including number theory, probability theory and dynamical systems). Fractal geometry, together with the broader fields of nonlinear dynamics and complexity, represented a large segment of modern science at the end of the 20 th century; this paper investigate the concepts of chaos theory and fractal geometry as a conceptual transformation at secondary school level. This paper reports a study of the effects of teaching chaos theory and fractal geometry on geometric reasoning skills in geometry. Thirty of the tenth grade students of basic education participated in an experimental group, which was involved in working with chaos theory and fractal geometry activities, pre-treatment measures the geometric Reasoning skills. Teaching fractal geometry properties and examples were focused in the teaching activities. At the end of the teaching measures  geometric reasoning skills were again obtained. Since the study was an exploration, the effectiveness of teaching chaos theory and fractal geometry, the exploratory data collected by the researcher was also considered to be an important part of the study.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130002055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the effect of Differentiated learning method (DLM) on students’ achievement in writing skills in learning Arabic as a foreign language in Malaysia. A total of 100 students (47 males and 53 females), who were randomly selected, participated in this study. The pre-and post-tests comparison groups design was used to determine if there was significant differences between the experimental and control groups. The experimental group was taught using DLM, while the control group was taught using the teacher-centered method (TCM). Descriptive statistics were used to determine the effect of DLM on students’ achievement in writing skills. The statistical results demonstrated that there was a significant difference in the post-test between the experimental group (M=10.14, SD=2.79) and the control group (M=8.20, SD= 2.38); t (3.73), p < .05). The experimental group’s achievement was generally more than the control group’s which proves that the DLM is an effective approach in improving students’ writing achievement in learning Arabic Language as a foreign language in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116740670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This present study is investigating preliminary views and conceptions  of in-service teachers on culture and mathematics education. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey on all 27 teachers who majored in mathematics education. The group was considered small enough to render sampling unnecessary. It was observed that a good part of students were aware of the significance of the role of culture on mathematics education whilst some were not very sure how culture played a role in the field of mathematics. We recommend the school curriculum to implement culture-oriented mathematics education that ensures the survival of African culture.","PeriodicalId":247415,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Research in Education Methodology","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121196884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
