One of the subjects covered was shielding of EM waves. The theory which was taught is consistent with the theory proposed by H.W. Ott (1976). One of the students took exception to the theory. His comments were that the impedance of the barrier assumes an infinitely thick barrier where the thickness of the barriers on his spacecraft are of finite thickness, and absorption loss is an I/sup 2/R loss, not skin effect. The combined currents and radiated fields of these two structures are equivalent to those of the original structure. This allows the direct prediction of the portion of the radiated fields due to the common-mode (asymmetric) currents whose emissions often dominate those of the differential-mode (symmetric) currents. Amemiya","doi":"10.1109/ISEMC.1991.148234","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISEMC.1991.148234","url":null,"abstract":"A Mach-Zehnder interferometer whose half-wave voltage is about 4 V and a YAG laser pumped by a laser diode whose output power is 25 mW are used to improve the sensitivity of a LiNbO/sub 3/ electromagnetic field sensor. The resulting frequency response is almost flat from 100 Hz to 300 MHz and the minimum detectable electric field strength is 1 mV/m at 50 MHz and 0.14 mV/m at 750 MHz. The frequency response of the sensor is analyzed using the moment method, and the calculated results agree with the measured results. Image theory has been used in the literature to explain why conductive planes have this effect. The validity of using image plane theory in analyzing printed circuit boards is questionable because of the finite size of these planes. Some effects of the conductive planes are due to the additional load which these planes put on the source. Along with this activity there has been some implicit reexamination of traditional EMC measurement procedures. Limit setting procedures have also been under reexamination, but not nearly as extensively. The Accredited Standards Committee C63 has initiated a program whose ultimate objective is to establish uniform test procedures and rationales for setting limits. This effort is being implemented through its direct participation in international, military, FCC. and its own standards efforts. The course includes 51 hours of lectures and 34 hours of laboratory experiments. The students are required to perform ten labs on original equipment. Individuality, coupling of labs, comparison of experiments and calculations, and hand construction are basic principles to increase the efficiency of training. Because of recent difficulties in adopting FCC-generated procedures, the Commission staff is working with an industry committee to develop a single, industry-consensus standard for testing compliance of many of the devices subject to Part 15. This noise may cause delay and false triggering problems at the functional level, as well as emissions problems due to the fast rise time and amplitude of current spikes induced. Test results which attest to the seriousness of the groundbounce problem in large ASICs are presented. The importance of the positioning of switching drivers as a factor in reducing groundbounce is discussed. The model of groundbounce is detailed to include layout and package parameters, in order to more accurately calculate the effective inductance value to be used for predictions.
