For much of the film, we found it necessary to treat our oceans like we would our hero characters, and so we developed three ocean rigs that formed the basis of all our ocean variants. Using a unified workflow that our artists were already familiar with, these rigs gave them the ability to easily portray and dial in a wide variety of ocean types such as open seas, calm seas, stormy seas, lagoons, shorelines, and wide ocean vistas, some which spanned hundreds of kilometers out to the horizon. This paper describes the techniques we used and some of the challenges we faced in developing these ocean rigs.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127336236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper addresses this issue by proposing a family of finger-and-hand gestures that can be robustly recognized and employed over a multitouch tabletop surface. We describe how these gestures can be recognized in real-time with the use of depth sensing, and suggest several examples of how touch-based information augmented with information like hand differentiation, hand posture discrimination and finger tilt dynamics can improve conventional exploratory visualization. We present two case studies to show how the augmented gestures can be employed in different exploratory visualization scenarios more effectively.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"72 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114034427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a multi-level sketch-based interface that incorporates low-level geometrical features and high-level structural features, namely reflection, rotation, and translation symmetries, to support decorative pattern exploration at different levels of detail. Four brush tools are designed for users to specify any combination of such features and compose a hybrid search query. The results of a pilot study show that users are able to perform pattern retrieval tasks using our system easily and effectively.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130312666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polygon models and subdivision methods require a large number of parameters to model smooth surfaces. NURBS need fewer parameters but have a complicated rational expression and non-uniform shifts in their formulation. We present a new method to construct deformable closed surfaces, which includes the exact sphere, by combining the best of two worlds: a smooth and interpolating model with a continuously varying tangent plane and well-defined curvature at every point on the surface. Our formulation is simpler than NURBS while it requires fewer parameters than polygon meshes. We demonstrate the generality of our method with applications ranging from intuitive user-interactive shape modeling, continuous surface deformation, reconstruction of shapes from parameterized point clouds, to fast iterative shape optimization for image segmentation.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132239332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different fields can lead to different visual effects. The topology of a tensor field, such as degenerate tensors, can cause artifacts in these applications. Existing 2D tensor field design systems cannot handle the topology of 3D tensor fields. We present, to our best knowledge, the first 3D tensor field design system. At the core of our system is the ability to specify and control the type, number, location, shape, and connectivity of degenerate tensors. To enable such capability, we have made a number of observations of tensor field topology that were previously unreported. We demonstrate applications of our method in volumetric synthesis of solid and geometry texture as well as anisotropic Gabor noise.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117160542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given a manifold surface and an N-way rotational symmetry field, a branched covering space is a manifold surface that has an N-to-1 map to the original surface except at the so-called ramification points, which correspond to the singularities in the rotational symmetry field. Understanding the notion and mathematical properties of branched covering spaces is important to researchers in geometry processing. In this paper, we provide a framework to construct and visualize the branched covering space (BCS) of an input mesh surface and a rotational symmetry field defined on it. In our framework, the user can visualize not only BCSs but also their construction process. In addition, our system allows the user to design the geometric realization of the BCS using mesh deformation techniques. This enables the user to verify important facts about BCSs such as that they are manifold surfaces around singularities and the Riemann-Hurwitz formula which relates the Euler characteristic of the BCS to that of the original mesh.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129278438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Meta-ball rendering is widely used in computer graphics to represent liquid drops, and especially important to particle-based fluid dynamics for the rendering on the final stage. Traditionally, meta-balls are procedurally modeled in object space according to implicit surface extraction and rendered as meshes. Instead of such consuming geometry-based methods, our algorithm is executed at screen-space level, and it utilizes the features of GPU, which demands low overheads and thus is much faster. Compared with other screen-space methods of particle rendering, our method obeys the basic principle of implicit surface. Consequently, real-time meta-ball rendering can be achieved very efficiently in a significantly high quality.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121397717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In digital production environment, existing precomputed fluid animations are often reused for different scenes in order to reduce the cost for creating scenes containing fluids. However, applying same animations to different scenes produces unacceptable results, so the animation needs to be edited. In order to do this, we develop a method for synthesizing desired flow fields by combining existing flow fields. Our system allows the user to place existing flow fields at arbitrary positions, and combine them by interpolating the regions between these flow fields, to synthesize a new flow field. The interpolation of the flow fields is realized by solving a minimization problem. Our minimization problem consists of two energy functions for smoothly interpolating the velocities and satisfying the incompressibility. Our method can create the desired incompressible flow fields by reusing existing flow fields.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116914050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative approach meant it was unclear which saliency models were better, or how well they compared to human perception. In the first quantitative analysis of 3D computational saliency models, we evaluate four computational saliency models and two baseline models against ground-truth saliency collected in previous work.","PeriodicalId":242138,"journal":{"name":"SIGGRAPH ASIA 2016 Technical Briefs","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121221860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
