The COVID-19 pandemic and physical distance measures have created significant limitations for social research conducted in this ongoing process. Besides, it has been discussed what kind of possibilities for future studies can emerge from strategies pursued by researchers to overcome these limitations. Based on two field studies conducted in the context of multi-hazard and social vulnerability in the city of Istanbul in the early period of the pandemic, this article discusses the possibilities and limitations, methodological framework and unique dynamics of conducting online qualitative research in this process. In the first research, interviews were conducted with 20 mukhtars from different neighborhoods in four municipalities of Istanbul with different levels of social vulnerability. In the second research, 20 people who meet the social vulnerability status from eight neighborhoods of Sancaktepe municipality of Istanbul were interviewed. In both studies, semi-structured online interviews were conducted and Google Maps Street View application was used throughout the research. Limitations formed in these novel conditions and strategies to overcome these limitations were tackled under the following headings; sampling design and access, time and cost, distance between researcher-participant and ethical issues, and changing concepts of space and field. Finally, suggestions were proposed for how the experiences, new skills and approaches gained through these studies could be used in the future. By doing that, the windows to be opened in the discipline of Sociology through digital windows were also discussed.","PeriodicalId":240052,"journal":{"name":"Sosyoloji Araştırmaları Dergisi","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117301752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is seen in the literature that there is a conceptually chaotic situation regarding these emerging concepts due to the diversity of both the sources and the foundations of these relationships. To clarify and frame this subject, efforts were first made to clarify the concepts related to the subject, followed by an attempt to conceptualize new types of clientelism in the field that are not included in the literature. In this context, such relations were examined in this study based on appointments to positions in public employment in 2019 such as district governor, judge/prosecutor, or inspector that allow for clientelist relations due to legal regulations such as security investigations and interviews. Field data and a literature review were used in the study based on a qualitative sociological research approach and some new conceptualizations were established in this context. These are structural favoritism, which indicates macro-level ethno-religious discrimination; exclusionary/extreme favoritism, which entails the removal of those who occupy existing positions in order to open new positions; and radical favoritism, a type that operates through laws.","PeriodicalId":240052,"journal":{"name":"Sosyoloji Araştırmaları Dergisi","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129198548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach, which was accepted as a return to subjectivity, is widely used in the interpretive social sciences. However, this phenomenology has its own limitations and contradictions when applied in social sciences: the “bracketing” method is impossible to apply, it cannot capture the deeper meanings, it does not focus on social interaction, and it is also suitable for positivist approaches to be applied in interpretive studies. Do these problems mean competent descriptive social research is impossible? First Heidegger and then Gadamer developed hermeneutical philosophies to overcome these issues of phenomenology and van Manen presented a methodology to allow the use of hermeneutic phenomenology to be used in the social sciences. The goal of the present study is to emphasize the problems of phenomenology while adapting it to social sciences. This work, after analyzing the problems of Husserlian description in the social sciences, will cover the basics of hermeneutical phenomenology and the methodology developed by van Manen to be able to reply to the question of “how” together with “what” and the Heideggerian “woodpath.”","PeriodicalId":240052,"journal":{"name":"Sosyoloji Araştırmaları Dergisi","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124498447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
