This research investigated the causes of indiscipline among students as viewed by primary school teachers in Nigeria. The research also examined the influence of gender, school locale, years of teaching experience and educational attainment on the respondents’ views. In addition, this research employed a descriptive survey method. A total of 200 primary school teachers in Nigeria participated in the research. They responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled ‘Causes of Indiscipline Questionnaire’ (CIQ). Then, the psychometric properties of the instrument were established and the collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Furthermore, the findings showed that the causes of indiscipline among students as viewed by primary school teachers in Nigeria were societal, governmental, parental, school and students factors respectively. In view of the findings, it is recommended that government and school administrators should formulate policies in schools to curb indiscipline among students.","PeriodicalId":236584,"journal":{"name":"Mimbar Sekolah Dasar","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132314890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Engagement refers to the students’ commitment or effort involved in learning. Engagement often has various categories such as behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement. In this paper, a technology-supported learning model is proposed for the purpose of promoting students’ engagement in online learning. This model is composed of three key components: pedagogical design, social design, and technical design. Pedagogical design aims to achieve predefined learning objectives through well-designed instructional strategies and learning activities so that students can be behaviorally engaged (e.g., high participation, active exploration) and cognitively engaged (e.g., asking questions, giving evaluative comments). Social design is to create a comfortable and friendly setting where students are willing to interact with peers and/or with the teacher so that emotional engagement (e.g., positive social relationship between students and the teacher) and cognitive engagement (e.g., knowledge construction) can be attained. Technical design intends to create a usable platform that students can easily manipulate without technical difficulties. All these designs must take the context (e.g., elementary education level) into careful consideration.","PeriodicalId":236584,"journal":{"name":"Mimbar Sekolah Dasar","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129897277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through poetry writing, students’ imaginative writing skills can be improved. The purpose of this research is to describe the improvement in poetry writing skills and students’ activity using Prezi. This research employed a classroom action research method conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages, namely: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research were fifth-grade students of a primary school in Inderalaya consisting of 13 male students and 16 female students. The instrument of the data collection was a poetry writing test. The results of the three cycles in this research were 44.44%, 78.57%, and 89.28% respectively. It showed an increase in poetry writing skills of fifth-grade primary school students after the use of Prezi media in learning. Hence, it can be concluded that Prezi was an appropriate media to teach poetry writing. It is recommended that Prezi could be used as an alternative media to teach writing in the primary school.","PeriodicalId":236584,"journal":{"name":"Mimbar Sekolah Dasar","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115782127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative research was by involving Grade 4 teachers, students, and the principal of a primary school in Yogyakarta as the research subjects. The research object was the activities carried out in the curriculum implementation. The data collection instruments include observation sheets, interview guidelines, questionnaires, and analysis guidelines. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The data validity was tested using triangulation techniques. The research found that the planning stage include studying the syllabus and teacher’s books then outlining the steps of the activities with the scientific approach; the teachers had integrated the science learning with other subjects under a theme; and the scientific approach was employed through observing, questioning, experimenting, associating/reasoning, and communicating. However, the overall implementation of the 2013 Curriculum had not been optimal yet. The teachers had used authentic assessment to assess the students' attitudes, knowledge, and skills, but they rarely used assessment instruments and rubrics. The obstacles faced by teachers were in the planning, classroom implementation, and assessment stages.","PeriodicalId":236584,"journal":{"name":"Mimbar Sekolah Dasar","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122719079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A descriptive survey designed was adopted to draw 200 primary school teachers. One research question was raised and three null hypotheses were respectively postulated to guide the research at 0.05 level of significance. In addition, data analysis was done using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Furthermore, the findings revealed that low self-esteem was the most influencing emotional development of primary school students in Ilorin metropolis. The findings also revealed that there was no significant difference in the influence of single parenting on the emotional development of primary school students in terms of gender and qualification. It is recommended that teachers of students from single parents should be more sensitive to their emotional needs and always be ready to assist them. Moreover, counsellors should collaborate with teachers and parents to minimize the negative influence of single parenting. Teachers are suggested to be more sensitive and willing to assist students whenever they have problems at home. Single parents are suggested to provide more quality time with their children to avoid them performing negative behaviors. Parents are suggested to maintain stable home by living together to enhance their children emotional development.","PeriodicalId":236584,"journal":{"name":"Mimbar Sekolah Dasar","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129046401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
