The article argues for the hypothesis that the noun *krasa, denoting a craf-ted piece perfect in shape = a beautiful object (cf. the motivational pattern of Latin formosus ‘shapely, beautiful'), could be a derivative of *kresati. The ‘fi re making' semantics developed by *kresati would in its turn moti-vate the shift towards the meaning ‘red (color)', by association with fire.","PeriodicalId":235853,"journal":{"name":"Slavic and Balkan Linguistics","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123526252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The received data are then compared with attested Latin forms. Cases where the reconstruction doesn’t correspond to the reality are brought to light, while the reasons behind it are explained. The results of the research can be most useful for lexicostatistics, where reconstructed Swadesh lists are widely applied, but at the same time they are valuable for the methodology of comparative linguistics on the whole.","PeriodicalId":235853,"journal":{"name":"Slavic and Balkan Linguistics","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123282883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gura 2012, 2013). The author makes an attempt to develop the hypothesis, according to which the lexeme is auto-chthonous to Slovak; nevertheless, he prefers the explanation presented by Rudolf (1991: loanword from German Bescheidessen ‘food from a feast sent to neighbours, given to guests as a gift for their relatives who did not take part in the celebration, etc.') which he еlаbоrаtеs and compares with the Slovak dialectal material.","PeriodicalId":235853,"journal":{"name":"Slavic and Balkan Linguistics","volume":"15 12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121018365","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
