To be successful in tech transfer, researchers must understand the need to adapt to new mindsets and to learn from others with legal and business experience. The key differences between the academic culture and one that places primacy on a market-driven mindset are described, and the skills needed for team-based translation of research to the marketplace are compared and contrasted. Reward systems are incongruent between the two cultures, and understanding the inherent tension between academic and market-driven value systems is important for researchers and policymakers alike.","PeriodicalId":235446,"journal":{"name":"Beyond Discovery","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128663756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The responsibility for initiating reports of inventions rests with the researcher, and thereafter other institutional offices become involved. The four major types of funding are intramural funds, external grants, industry sponsored agreement, and crowdfunding; they have variable expectations for how the results stemming from that funding can be commercialized. Consulting activity and special programs to promote commercialization such as I-Corps are treated briefly. Finally, we explore the crowdfunding environment, which has emerged as a source of early support for commercialization.","PeriodicalId":235446,"journal":{"name":"Beyond Discovery","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122091720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the United States, societal movements such as Black Lives Matters and the Women’s March are shining a light on structural inequities that disadvantage women and minorities. The world of commercialization is no different. This chapter briefly discusses the representation of women, black, Latinx, and indigenous inventors in academia and then delves into some causal factors that disadvantage women and minorities in tech transfer. A number of efforts are being made to redress the imbalance. For example, recommendations have been made for explicit language in tenure and promotion materials, which will encourage women and minority faculty to consider commercialization, and specialized institutional programs to address the gender gaps in commercialization.","PeriodicalId":235446,"journal":{"name":"Beyond Discovery","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133613427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides guidance on big mistakes to avoid. The single most important topic is avoiding public disclosure: academics used to the free exchange of ideas can easily erode their ability to commercialize if they share information out of sequence. The chapter also describes problems associated with inappropriate transfer of materials and data among institutions. Ten best practices are then offered; academics who follow those practices more effectively engage with the tech transfer office and support efforts to commercialize. Finally, advice is offered to those who work at smaller institutions that may not have a commercialization infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":235446,"journal":{"name":"Beyond Discovery","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122143759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first step, establishing the company, is straightforward but thereafter a suite of decisions must be made and the researcher must adapt to a completely different environment. The founder must decide on their desired level of involvement, whether as CEO, CSO, or Board member, and those roles can change over time. A steep learning curve requires academics to acquire new skills, mindsets, and vocabulary. Business decisions predominate in the start-up environment, and timelines are accelerated. Start-ups can tap into numerous resources (collectively known as the entrepreneurial ecosystem), and special funding streams can help young companies enhance their value propositions. While the pathway to success is arduous and long, seeing your work become a product that sells in the marketplace is exhilirating.","PeriodicalId":235446,"journal":{"name":"Beyond Discovery","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124619413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
