Abstract

Chapter 6 offers proactive steps for inventors to raise the probability that their insights and discoveries move into the hands of commercialization partners. It provides guidance on big mistakes to avoid. The single most important topic is avoiding public disclosure: academics used to the free exchange of ideas can easily erode their ability to commercialize if they share information out of sequence. The chapter also describes problems associated with inappropriate transfer of materials and data among institutions. Ten best practices are then offered; academics who follow those practices more effectively engage with the tech transfer office and support efforts to commercialize. Finally, advice is offered to those who work at smaller institutions that may not have a commercialization infrastructure.
