Furthermore, their controllable breeding requirements make them suitable for laboratory experiments. Ten male rabbits were used in the presented study. The arteries supplying the upper digestive system organs were dissected. Morphometric and macroanatomical findings of these organs were taken and organs were imaged using X-ray. In rabbits, the upper lip was found to have a cleft (philtrum). The number of palatine rugae on the palate was determined to be 13 pairs. The average linguae length in rabbits was measured as 52.39±1.75 mm. Torus of the tongue and median sulcus of the tongue was seen prominently on the tongue. Four types of papillae were macroanatomically detected on the linguae. These were filiform papillae, fungiform papillae, vallate papillae, and foliate papillae. The tongue muscles and arteries were dissected and named. The parotid gland was 28.4 mm in length, 57.245 mm in width, and 44.58 g in weight. Total oesophagus length was determined as 15.85 cm and weight was 2.41 g. As a result, this study contributed to the anatomy literature on rabbit upper digestive system organs. So far, the QRA has not been applied in a canine risk assessment for establishing concentration limits of ingredients with Type IV hypersensitivity potential. Outlining this risk assessment is critical, as shampoos are known to cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in canines. Additionally, humans have developed ACD after washing their dogs with dog shampoo. To address this gap, we conducted a thorough literature review on canine Type IV hypersensitivity and identified potential differences which might demand an adaptation of the QRA. We summarize data from the literature demonstrating that all four key events (KE) in the skin sensitization adverse outcome pathway (AOP) are present in dogs as they are in humans, guinea pigs, and mice. The hazard potential of sensitizers for canines is compared with the established sensitization QRA framework for humans. The limited collective evidence suggests that dogs are not more susceptible to sensitizers than humans; therefore, safety-defined concentration limits from Type IV hypersensitivity risk assessments for humans can be re-applied to canines so long as their unique exposure considerations are factored in. Using the principles in this review, one can evaluate chemical sensitizers to support the safe development of new topical formulations for canines. The result of applying our current best approaches for assessing ACD to canine products should protect both the pet and the owners.</p>","PeriodicalId":23543,"journal":{"name":"Veterinary Medicine and Science","volume":"11 4","pages":"e70463"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2025-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12178314/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"144333954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infection of cats is infrequent, and diagnosis of feline cardiopulmonary dirofilariosis may be overlooked. Here we describe D. immitis infections in two cats from Central-Northern Italy, where heartworm disease is endemic in dogs. Both cats tested positive on a rapid heartworm point of care (POC) antigen test. Case 1, a 13-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair (DSH) cat was investigated for progressive respiratory signs, including cough, nasal discharge, dyspnea and reverse sneezing. By contrast, Case 2, a 7-year-old male entire free-roaming colony cat with a fractured right tibia, tested positive during pre-surgical screening tests. Both cases were seropositive for Dirofilaria species anti-IgG. A duplex real-time PCR (dqPCR) for D. immitis and D. repens was positive for D. immitis DNA in Case 1 and negative in Case 2. Conventional PCR and sequencing of partial cox1 and 12S rRNA genes confirmed D. immitis infection in Case 1. Echocardiography displayed the presence of adult heartworms in the right heart and main pulmonary artery in both cases. These clinical cases highlight the importance of using a combination of antigenic, serological and diagnostic imaging tests to confirm dirofilariosis in cats.
