However, PTs cannot be fully utilized if the associated circuitry does not allow for the desired transformation ratio to be maintained. The effects of adding capacitive and/or resistive loads to a PT are being studied. Experiments and modeling suggest that the highest transformation ratios are achieved when both the resistive and reactive load elements are optimized, rather than only the magnitude of the impedance. Specifically, these effects are being studied to modularize the PT as a compact, high-voltage power supply for a variety of applications. This paper will analyze these loading effects and suggest a coupling method for maintaining high transformation ratios from Rosen-type PTs comprised of rotated y-cut lithium niobate.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115529767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Randomly aligned Multi-Walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) under different growth conditions. These nanotubes are then tested for their field emission characteristics at different pressures ranging from 2×10-7 Torr to 20×10-3 Torr in Helium gas. Effects of different gases at different pressure on the field emission properties of carbon nanotubes are studied and results are presented. Fowler-Norheim (FN) plots revealed nonlinear slopes for all the samples tested in different background pressures. It is known that the slope of the FN plots gives information about the field enhancement factor of the surface. Therefore, the nonlinearity is attributed to a nonlinear field enhancement factor. These data are used in determining a proper cold cathode material to be used as a trigger electrode for pseudospark switches.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124393383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The insulation resistance (IR) of capacitor applies a leakage path through the dielectric and would exert negative influences on the efficiency of the pulsed power system. This paper mainly concentrates on the leakage phenomenon in MPPFC by the measurement and analysis of IR. The results indicate that the time constant called equivalent IR is extremely sensitive to electric fields and temperatures. Finally theoretical calculation of equivalent IR based on electrical conduction is carried out. And the calculation shows that equivalent IR value is influenced by the coefficient of Poole-Frenkel effect.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114570987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A two-spiral corrugated Bragg reflector has been used downstream of the cathode in an X-band relativistic backward wave oscillator (RBWO) to radiate a TEn mode at the output. Simple analytical formulas were used to design the basic parameters of the Bragg reflector, which were later optimized numerically since there is no exact closed form solution for the electromagnetic fields within a periodic waveguide structure or cavity. The fully electromagnetic, fully relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) code MAGIC was used to simulate the problem. The RBWO was driven by a voltage pulse that has a half sine wave-like shape, 460 kV amplitude, and FWHM duration of 12 ns. A uniform static magnetic field of 1.9 T was applied throughout the simulation volume. With these parameters a microwave power of 330 MW at a frequency of 9.9 GHz in a clean TEn mode pattern was detected at the output.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123522419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to that vacuum breakdown frequently occurs, snubber is often used as functional passive protection device to be inserted between the ion source and its acceleration power supply for arc quenching purpose where stray capacitance between its floating HV pole and ground plays the key role in designing the system. Due to the transformer effects of the core snubber, reactive voltage could be instantly generated by inserting time varying impedance in the main circuit to balance the suddenly disappeared resistance of the ion source, which limits the HV fault current. The stray capacitance is mainly due to the HV transmission lines. Based on the stray capacitance, time-varying resistor method and flux matching method are respectively developed for designing the snubbers. The two methods are integrated together from the basic transformer theory. By historically reviewing the requirements of ITER snubbers with experiments, it was found that varying impedance method may give more robust design.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124852999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The switch jitter influences the ripple by displacing it in time, and therefore plays a fundamental role in pulse-to-pulse reproducibility. Furthermore, when compared with other phenomena, switch jitter affects reproducibility differently depending on the converter topology (since the switch arrangement is different). In order to consider pulse-to-pulse reproducibility early in the design process of a converter (i.e. topology selection), an efficient and flexible method for estimating this performance as a function of ripple and the expected, or measured, switch jitter is necessary. This paper presents a methodology applicable to all switch mode power converters, which allows the derivation of the pulse-to-pulse reproducibility versus ripple and switch jitter (driver included). The numerically validated method uses analytical expressions derived from harmonics analysis.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127091607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cancer treatment by an ultra-short pulse high electric field is one of them. High power pulse electromagnetic wave has been proposed to apply the high electric field for that treatment. This work focuses on the design of a compact high power burst pulse electromagnetic wave generator using a nanosecond pulsed power generator for the cancer treatment. In previous study, we have used a LC inversion circuit as a power supply of the pulse electromagnetic wave generator. The LC inversion circuit is useful in order to output efficiently electromagnetic wave by the antenna. However, since the LC inversion circuit outputs the voltage waveform with damping oscillation, the duration of the burst pulse is under 100ns. Therefore, we focus on a coaxial nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) filled with ferrite cores. NLTL is capable of generating the high frequency osculation pulse wave. The non-linear coaxial line has the advantage of simple structure and low cost in comparison with the other NLTL using a non-linear element. Therefore we have investigated the burst pulse generator using the ferrite-filled coaxial non-linear transmission line in order to extend the duration of the burst oscillation for the cancer treatment. In the experiment, the pulse duration time and frequency of the output pulse of the NLTL for various conditions of the input pulse shape and the magnetic cores were investigated.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127134157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Effect of shortening electrode separation of a coaxial reactor was investigated in order to generate ozone in high concentration in using pulsed power. Ozone concentration and yield increased with decreasing diameter of the reactor because spatial density of plasma would become higher. In these reactors, the ozone yield remained in nearly constant value while the ozone concentration increased in proportion to pulse repetition rate. In reactor of 17 mm, saturation tendency and reduction of the concentration were however seen. In this reactor, the ozone concentration decreases with time after reaching a peak value. Spark discharges with short electrode separation caused temperature elevation of electrodes and gases, so that thermal decomposition of ozone molecules occurred. When oxygen gas containing ozone instead of pure oxygen gas flowed into the reactor, rise of the ozone concentration competed with ozone concentration produced with pure ozone gas. The rise showed potential of plasma for ozone production. Ozone with higher concentration could be obtained by the potential of plasma on an appropriate condition.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123734666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To facilitate this research, we have designed and constructed a versatile modulator to drive the HPM sources that allow us to drive two Vircators in parallel. The modulator consists of a thyratron-switched capacitor bank that pulse charges a water transmission line through a pulse transformer. The water transmission line is then switched into a voltage adder by a pressurized oil switch with an output risetime of 20 ns. The capacitor bank is charged to 30 kV by a bank of power supplies delivering up to 40 kJ/s and switched by a thyratron into the pulse transformer. The 1:10 pulse transformer charges the water line to 300 kV in approximately 2.5 μs. When driven by the pulse line, the 250 kV output voltage is utilized to simultaneously drive the two, 32 Ω Vircators in parallel or a 16 Ω load with a 70 ns long pulse. We will present details of the design, including particle-in-cell simulations using CST Particle Studio and SPICE circuit simulations of the Vircator design and modulator design, as well as construction details. The test results will also be presented.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132437395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
