The experimental apparatus consists of a high-power microwave (HPM) virtual-cathode oscillator (vircator) driven by a 200 ns, 80 J, 225 kV low-impedance Marx Generator. Plasma expansion due to explosive electron field emission has shown to lower gap impedance, spoil consistent low vacuum levels, and cut-off microwave radiation. The anode materials compared are nickel 201L (Ni201L), stainless steel 316L (SS316L) and grade-1 titanium (TiG1); with the cathode material being aluminum. The anodes were cleaned by the following method: rough polishing followed by electro-polishing, a ten minute microwave argon / 10% oxygen plasma cleaning process (ArO2) and finally, a 72 hour in situ bake-out at 300°C. Outgassing characteristics of each anode material are presented and compared.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129232581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The insulation diagnosis mechanism is established by the characteristics of the probability distribution of discharge parameters. The data process of partial discharge consists of filtering and reduction, parameter extraction and parameter estimation of probability model. Four probability models were utilized, such as, Normal distribution, Log-Normal distribution, Weibull distribution and Gamma distribution. The failure of the goodness-of-fit test accompanied with huge variation of discharge parameters and striking distribution parameters. These outliers might imply that a structural variation might happen and could be used to analyze the insulation mechanism. Finally, the Normal distribution parameter for the weight of discharge region is chosen to be a feature. The threshold of insulation status is the upper limit of confidence level calculated by three standard deviations. The result shows that the outliers appeared at two sites which divide deterioration of the insulation into tree partitions, such as initial term, midterm, and final term.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"238 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114087884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will talk about two designs, one for electrostatic kickers and one for electromagnetic kickers. The electrostatic kicker achieves a 20 kV transition on a 200 pF strip-line within 220 ns from trigger at a maximum transition frequency of 40 kHz using less than 8 kW at full power. The electromagnetic kicker achieves 1000 A into a 0.523 μh magnet with a 50 ns rise time operating at a maximum frequency of 20 Hz. Both systems are all solid state. The electrostatic kicker operates using a fast resonant charge circuit combined with a slow maintenance circuit in a push-pull configuration operating at ±10 kV. The rise time of the voltage change is less than 100 ns and either state can be maintained indefinitely. The magnet kicker operates using a PFN and a fast thyristor based switch followed by a small pulse compression circuit.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126436825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiments were carried out on the pulsed power generator PPG-I (400kA/500kV/100ns) which was designed and constructed by Tsinghua University. The source X-pinch and object single-wire or multi-wire Z-pinch are installed in the place of a current-return rod or the center between the anode and the cathode, respectively. The X-ray films with high resolution and high sensitivity were used to record the results. A resistive current probe and a Rogowski coil were used to monitor the current, and a step wedge filter was designed to measure the mass ablation rate of the thin wire. By a large number of imaging experiments, the time sequence of images for the coronal plasma formation, the inter-wire plasma merging, and the development of plasma instabilities of Z-pinch as well as some important quantitative parameters like mass ablation rate and core expansion rate were obtained.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127910834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system was engineered to run the devices through an arbitrary number of test cycles while recording all pertinent data automatically. Test parameters are set through a windows GUI which communicates with a microprocessor - based control system that orchestrates timing and settings of each subsystem as well as acquiring voltage and current waveforms with high speed ADCs operating simultaneously in parallel. The test waveform itself is generated by a Pulse Forming Network (PFN) which accurately controls rise time, fall time and pulse width. The PFN is charged by a Rapid Capacitor Charger (RCC) system designed at the P3E lab that is capable of 10 kW and allows precise charge voltage levels to be set. Waveforms are acquired through isolated probes specifically designed to capture desired signals even in the presence of a large bias voltages.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131781418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our previous research, underwater shock waves focusing by pulsed discharges using a magnetic pulse compression unit (MPC) were studied. In this paper, effects of pulsed electric discharge parameters, like voltage amplitude and pulse duration, on the characteristic of cavitation bubbles and shock waves were visualized and analyzed. Pulsed discharge shock waves and cavitations were produced by using a MPC unit. The water was degassed by a vacuum pump in order to eliminate the influence of dissolved air. In order to prevent electrical discharge oscillation and to increase the electrode life time, degassed saline electrolyte was used. The whole sequences of shock wave generation by discharge plasma, bubble growth, bubble collapse, and secondary shock wave generation near the electrode were visualized by time-resolved high speed shadowgraph method. Using the visualization results and image analysis, radius and collapse time of cavitation bubbles and their shock waves pressures were evaluated.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129378883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A test stand has been constructed to deliver capacitively stored energy to a copper foil load. When the copper foil vaporizes and expands, a flyer plate is launched and collides with a gas-impregnated target. An RLC circuit was designed to minimize the effects of the underdamped circuit and variable impedance of the vaporizing copper foil while delivering the energy needed to accelerate the flyer plate. Velocity data will be collected with a framing camera and correlated with the mass of the flyer plate and the charge voltage. These data make it possible to determine the velocity in future experiments when the target is blocking the line of sight of the framing camera.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133456846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the switching nature and variation in loading configuration in the aircraft system under study, the pulse-width modulation (PWM) control signals demonstrate inherent time-varying behaviors to keep the system's operation within IEEE/military standard limits. Therefore, the proposed technique can be employed to derive the key features of the non-linear switching signals under investigation, hence, can be treated as an effective method of the feedback control signals approximation. Finally, the GSSA approximated signals corresponding to the PWM switching function of the constant power (CP), constant voltage (CV) and constant current (CC) buck-converters in the DC power electronics system of Boeing 767 aircraft are derived, and the simulation results are obtained from a study model developed in PSIM9 environment. Also, the accuracy of obtained results from GSSA model is verified by developing a study model in PSIM9 environment.","PeriodicalId":228441,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Modulator and High Voltage Conference (IPMHVC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133457812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
