Lexical chunk, a language structure with specific discourse functions, possesses both lexical and grammatical features. As a multi-word unit, lexical chunks are examples of integral acquisition and storage in the human brain's memory. It's a language phenomenon that frequently appears in learners' spoken communication but is easily neglected. The ability to use lexical chunks is an important evaluation criterion for pragmatic competence. Lexical chunk usage plays an important role in learners' oral output. This paper aims to explore the application of lexical chunk usage in college students' English oral communication, and how factors such as learners' characteristics of using lexical chunks affect college students' oral output, thus affecting the proficiency, fluency and idiomaticity of communication.","PeriodicalId":223840,"journal":{"name":"Lecture Notes on Language and Literature","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135447336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The semantic evolution of \"kanlai\" involves its transformation from a collocational phrase \"kanlai1\" composed of \"kan\" (see) and \"lai\" (come), to a coalesced cognitive verb \"kanlai2\" and subsequently to a discourse marker \"kanlai3\" which is detached from any syntactic constituent. This trajectory embodies the process of grammaticalization. Throughout its diachronic evolution, mechanisms including disyllabification, semantic generalization, subjectification and syntactic position have contributed significantly to the grammaticalization of \"kanlai\".","PeriodicalId":223840,"journal":{"name":"Lecture Notes on Language and Literature","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135838528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

James Joyce introduced the term into the field of literature for the first time to explain the aesthetic process in artistic creation. Joyce's truly creative theoretical viewpoint should be his theory of spiritual epiphany. Epiphany is not only a sudden revelation of the underlying meaning of an individual's experience or a situation, but also the revelation of the true meaning of life as a whole, and it is a pure reflection of the truth, the good and the beautiful. In Joyce's novels, he pursued the reform and innovation of art form, and boldly adjusted and rebuilt the inherent literary order of the West. Actually Joyce's artistic innovation reflects the conflict and integration of literary tradition and revolution in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century.","PeriodicalId":223840,"journal":{"name":"Lecture Notes on Language and Literature","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135500986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The story presents an unforgettable atmosphere of terror and suspense and has distinct spatial characteristics. Influenced by the Western narrative theory of \"spatial turn,\" the concept of \"spatial narrative\" emerged in China in the late 20th century and has become a hot topic in literary and narrative studies. Based on the spatial narrative theories of Frank, Chatman, and Zoran, this paper will analyze and interpret the work \"The Fall of the House of Usher\" from three aspects: topographical space, chronotopic space, and textual space. The analysis reveals the positive role of spatial narrative in the development of the novel's plot, the shaping of character imagery, and the revelation of the character's inner thoughts, making readers feel the novel's unique Gothic aesthetics. This research hopes to provide a new perspective on the study of Edgar Allan Poe's works and offer new materials for developing spatial narrative studies.","PeriodicalId":223840,"journal":{"name":"Lecture Notes on Language and Literature","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135501182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novel focuses on the contrasting attitudes of two generations of the Kwan family towards the portrayal of the character Charlie Chen, providing a profound critique of the white depiction of Chinese American stereotypes. This article aims to analyze the protagonist Ulysses' dual traumas in his coming-of-age journey and examine how he establishes a new racial ideology and constructs a hybrid identity under the guidance of Longman Kwan's reverse leadership. Target readers are unable to comprehend the omitted cultural information in the original text, and the tacit understanding between the author of the original text and the native readers is lost between the translator and the target readers, which resulting in a semantic vacuum, the artistic value of the literary work is greatly reduced. Therefore, translators should pay special attention to the existence of cultural default phenomena, carefully consider the cultural background of the original work, and compensate for translation with appropriate compensation strategies. In this way, the target readers can get the literary enjoyment from the original work. This paper takes the cultural default in the communication between the four mother-daughter pairs in the film \"The Joy Luck Club\" as an example to explore the crucial role of cultural default and translation compensation strategies in cross-cultural communication.","PeriodicalId":223840,"journal":{"name":"Lecture Notes on Language and Literature","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135609956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
