Some scholars applied this theory to translation studies and gained an inspiring result. It was once pointed out that translation is not merely a communicative activity, but also a cognitive activity. Context plays a vital role in our understanding of the text. An effective translation requires translators to reason based on the dynamic context, which is largely dependent on the relevance of the language and environment. As a matter of fact, the process of translation is a process of context reasoning and selecting, which is dynamic and developing with the circumstances changing. When translating, the main task of translators is to figure out the relevance, particularly the optimal relevance between the language and context. According to the principle of relevance, translators can understand the original text accurately, and then render it into target language properly by composing and reasoning the most suitable context. This paper examines the transmission of cultural information in the English version of Fortress Besieged, a novel written by Chinese author Qian Zhongshu, through the lens of functional translation theory. The study aims to analyze how cultural elements in the original Chinese text are translated into English and to what extent the translations succeed in conveying the cultural information to English readers. The study employs a qualitative approach based on functional translation theory, which emphasizes the importance of context and function in translation. The analysis focuses on various cultural elements in the novel, including names, idioms, and cultural references, and examines how these elements are translated into English. The study also explores the role of the translator in the transmission of cultural information and investigates the challenges faced by the translator in dealing with cultural differences. The findings of the study suggest that the transmission of cultural information in the English version of Fortress Besieged is influenced by various factors, such as the translator's cultural background, the target audience, and the purpose of the translation. The study also reveals that while some cultural elements are successfully translated, others are lost or distorted in the process. Overall, this study intends to contribute to understanding the challenges and opportunities involved in the translation of cultural information and provide insights into the role of translation in cross-cultural communication. Owing to the existence of the language barriers and different cultural backgrounds, the translation of subtitling is of vital importance in the interaction of the translation, for most of the speculators are by means of subtitling to learn about the stories within the movies, and what's more, to learn about the foreign customs. However, at current stage, the research of the subtitle translation has not reached at the level of literature translation, with some protruding problems in the translation of subtitles. Therefore, how to find the practical method to improve the translation stands of subtitles serves as the emphasis of this paper. In Hatim and Mason's book, Discourse and the Translator, a model of context analysis is put forward. The analysis reveals that this systematic model, through distinct perspectives, provides the analysis of context in subtitling with comprehensive and logical sound bases. The adjustments made in subtitling are initiated and also governed by factors in the three dimensions of context. Accurate subtitle translation can overcome linguistic and cultural barriers and provide viewers with a premium cinematic experience, which is instrumental in the success of films. Taking register theory as the theoretical framework and the film Green Book as the research object, this paper is aimed at analyzing the guiding roles of the field, tenor, and mode in the process of subtitle translation and puts forward suggestions for some inappropriate subtitle translation to achieve the accuracy of subtitle translation. It is found that register theory emphasizes the importance of context, which not only enables subtitle translators to better identify the register of the source language and achieve register equivalence between the source text and the target text, but also helps to improve the quality of subtitle translation.
