The importance of mathematics has long been recognized all over the world, and that is why all students are required to study mathematics at the primary and secondary school levels, whether they have the aptitude for it or not (Ojo, 2015; Adebayo, 2008; Adeleke, 2007). However, despite the importance of mathematics in the Nigerian education system, the students’ performances continue to deteriorate year after year. Several reasons have been proffered for the high failure rate in mathematics. Given the options, many students will not offer mathematics (Agwagah, 2013). Agwagah noted that an increasing number of students find it difficult to do well in mathematics because of the teaching method used in teaching most of the themes are not interesting. In other words, the prime position accorded mathematics in the society is at risk because of persistent poor performance. According to Kurumeh and Achor (2008), the difficulties of students in learning mathematics could be attributed to the approach to which the contents are being presented to the students, the abstractness of mathematical concepts, and poor foundation, among others. Most students, especially, at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) have difficulties in understanding mathematics because of the language of instruction (which is English Language) (Ifeanacho, 2012). Majority of the students who are highly proficient in performing mathematical operations, in solving symbolic problems are less proficient in solving problems when it is algebraic (Iji, Abakpa, & Takor, 2015).In recent years, the language of instruction has become an active focus of investigation in education research, including research in mathematics education. Such focus is a symptom of a relatively recent paradigmatic shift whose main characteristics are a new understanding of the student and increasing awareness of the learning contexts, such as, notably the complexities arising from cultural and linguistic diversity (Radford & Barwell, 2022). When students’ conceptualizations are perceived to be incorrect, language is often then seen as an obstacle or barrier to the effective communication of the desired knowledge or structures. Language, however, is clearly more than a hindrance or an obstacle; language, talk, text and the production and interpretation of symbols are integral to the creation of learning, teaching and assessment, particularly in mathematics. The contributions of language, the politics of discourse, and critical studies, with most emphasis on the issue of multilingual classrooms need the urgent attention of education stakeholders. Multilingualism is the ability to speak two or more languages fluently. There are many benefits of multilingualism, such as improving cognitive, social, emotional, and economic skills. Multilingualism does not seem to have a significant impact on mathematical reasoning or problem-solving. However, multilingual stud","PeriodicalId":221664,"journal":{"name":"IJRDO- Journal of Educational Research","volume":"35 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141353849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CBC was rolled out by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in January 2018 and since then, studies have indicated that teachers who are the key implementers of the curriculum are not adequately trained. The current study sought to establish teachers’ perception on their preparedness to implement the Competency Based Curriculum in selected public and private primary schools in Kenya. The study was anchored on instructional design theory and targeted 23,286 public primary schools and 9,058 private primary schools in Kenya. The actual sample was made of 19 public primary schools and 31 private primary schools. The study adopted a convergent parallel mixed methods research design using a cross sectional survey design for the quantitative method and phenomenological design for the qualitative method. Data were collected using questionnaires and focus group discussions. Descriptive and inferential statistics were generated using MS Excel 2020 and SPSS version 21. Qualitative data from the focus group discussions were analyzed thematically and report given in narrative form and direct quotes. The findings revealed among other factors that digital literacy is still a challenge among teachers and that the number of trained teachers in the selected schools was approaching expectation. Resources for CBC are there in a number of schools but quite inadequate in a number of public schools. The study recommended that the training of teachers at all levels should be on-going and that there is an urgent need to help teachers understand the use of CBC assessment rubrics.","PeriodicalId":221664,"journal":{"name":"IJRDO- Journal of Educational Research","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121351259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was guided by the style and behavior theory. The survey was descriptive in nature. The target population was made up of 9,993 persons comprising of 396 teachers, 9575 students and 22 Principals from 22 public boys boarding secondary schools in Bungoma County. Using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table for determining sample sizes, the target population gave a sample size of 373 respondents. The study utilized two questionnaires i.e. for teachers and students, and interview schedules, for Principals, to collect data. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used to analyse data, which was later presented in tables. Qualitative data from the Principals was analysed using the theme under study and presented in a narrative form. The study established that democratic management style had an effect on students’ unrest in public boys’ boarding schools in Bungoma County. The model coefficient was found to be positive, indicating that democratic management style had a favorable effect on student unrest. Thus the findings showed democratic management style (β = .201, p <.05) had significant effect on student unrest. Therefore principals should consider involving students in decision-making, providing opportunities for student voice and input on decisions made, and establishing clear channels of communication. Principals should foster open communication, provide opportunities for student input, and create a culture of shared decision-making.","PeriodicalId":221664,"journal":{"name":"IJRDO- Journal of Educational Research","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133508983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The impact of many information flows, many cultural flows has affected the awareness, attitude and behavior of young people. For students of pedagogical schools, soft skills play an even more important role stemming from the professional characteristics of the sector. The output of students in pedagogical schools is mainly related to teaching - a field that requires ingenuity, flexibility, flexibility, skills in interaction, communication, and problem solving. To meet this goal, pedagogical schools need to attach importance to the education of soft skills for students in the training process.
