The study presented is part of an integrated supply-demand framework to study the evolution of the airline industry. The airline schedule is an important service variable that influences other factors of interest such as demand, profit, and load factor. Our approach attempts to predict the daily airline schedule for a given year, given the annual demand and schedule for the previous year, while minimizing the operating costs due to changes in the schedule. The modeling framework is comprised of three distinct sub-parts: a frequency generator to derive the optimal frequency in a market; a mechanism to obtain an integral solution from a fractional solution produced by the frequency generator; and a timetable generator to derive a daily operating schedule from the output of the second step. The model is validated using actual operating frequency information obtai...","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126266423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this problem, we route several classes of aircraft through an airspace at a fixed flight level in the presence of hard and soft constraints. Hard constraints are formed by hazards through which no aircraft can safely fly (e.g., severe convection, turbulence, or icing). Soft constraints are formed by hazards through which some pilots or airlines decide to fly while others do not (e.g., moderate turbulence or icing). We compute flight paths for two aircraft classes: Class-1 aircraft avoid hard constraints but are willing to fly through soft constraints, and Class-2 aircraft avoid both hard and soft constraints. Our work assists in designing future operational concepts in which jetway routing is retired and aircraft paths are allowed to adjust to the shapes and positions o...","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"156 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134217696","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADB-S) techniques are being developed and it is necessary to fuse the ADB-S and radar data. The data fusion requires an algorithm to correct range, azimuth and time biases for integration to take place. An algorithm based on optimization techniques and using a sequential reduction factor to accelerate the series of bias corrections is presented.","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124718617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Relevance reflects the controller’s information needs; it is measured by the criticality of the information, its importance, and the number of tasks that use the information. Prestige reflects the extent to which the tower supplies the information; it is measured by the number of sources that display that information. Based on a previous task analysis, we analyzed details about (1) which control position uses the information, (2) the relevance of that information to the different tower positions as well as to the tower as a whole, and (3) the prestige of the information. Results indicated that although the local controller uses the majority of information available in the tower, there are also a considerable number of information objects used by all three tower positions. This information used universally tended to be about status and tower procedures. Most trajectory planning has focused on airborne trajectories but surface trajectory models are needed to improve the performance of advanced decision tools. This paper evaluates five different models for the components of aircraft dynamics, intents, and pilot tracking actions. The performance of different models is evaluated with numerical simulations. Little difference in performance is found in among the models in predicting time of arrival and fuel consumption. The more sophisticated models will produce more accurate predictions but will require greater computational time.","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"48 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116692769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given estimations of CAT and aircraft trajectory data describing potential turbulence encounters in the NAS, models are developed to estimate the relationships between the type and magnitude of the maneuver versus the existence of turbulence in the upcoming sector of airspace or the existence of turbulence along the upcoming flight trajectory. Given that the existence of turbulence throughout the NAS can only be estimated through limited observations and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP)-based models, these models must necessarily be probabilistic. Results based on historical data indicate that pilot responses to CAT depend on several factors, including user class, weight class, physical class, aircraft type, as well as airline policies. This information can be used within the Next Generation Air Transportation Sys...","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133695088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author suggests meaningful probability ratios can be derived by using a simple contingent probability manipulation known as Bayes’ rule. The author argues that due to the way data are recorded and published, data required for proper normalization may not be available. An integrated traffic flow management decision-making approach that sequentially schedules and reroutes flights according to actual and forecast weather-induced airspace capacity constraints is described. The study tests the integrated system under 80 six-hour, fast-time simulation experiments. The authors describe the overall decision-making approach, discuss the implemented models, flight schedules, weather scenarios, and airspace capacity constraints, and present results of fast-time simulations used to explore trade-offs between optimization and heuristic-based models, strategic versus tactical flight controls, and system versus fleet preferences.","PeriodicalId":221205,"journal":{"name":"Air traffic control quarterly","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121776324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
