{"title":"Health-enhancing physical activity and the preventionof chronic diseases--an epidemiological review.","authors":"Jens Bucksch, Wolfgang Schlicht","doi":"10.1007/s00038-006-5043-4","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00038-006-5043-4","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To review the epidemiological evidence on the health-enhancing physical activity recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College for Sports Medicine (ACSM).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Review of papers written in English and German, issued after the release of the CDC/ACSM recommendation (i.e. after 1995), restricted to adults and to their physical health. Due to the large body of published data, no systematic review was performed. Instead, a representative cross-section of the published studies is presented.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>The international epidemiological evidence supports the CDC/ACSM recommendation as a reasonable public health message.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>According to this recommendation, the daily accumulation of 30 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity - independent of the context of physical activity (e.g. transport, leisure) - provides substantial benefits across a broad range of health outcomes for sedentary men and women. {"title":"Missing data due to a 'checklist misconception-effect'.","authors":"Thorsten Meyer, Ines Schäfer, Christine Matthis, Thomas Kohlmann, Oskar Mittag","doi":"10.1007/s00038-005-0005-9","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00038-005-0005-9","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To analyze the extent and relevance of a postulated \"checklist misconception-effect\" (a specific response pattern characterized by symptom-free persons not checking the \"not at all\"-category).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Our data is derived from a survey of blue collar workers (n = 228) who previously had filed in applications for medical rehabilitation benefits. We defined the \"checklist misconception-effect\" by the following response pattern: (1) at least one missing value and (2) at least one valid item response and (3) no 'not at all' responses.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>75% of the responders had complete data, 16.2% a postulated 'checklist misconception-effect'. Substantial co-variations with socio-demographic characteristics or health status indicators could not be found. Additional imputation of missing values under the assumption of a \"checklist misconception-effect\" led to a reduction of missing data in the somatisation-subscale score from 12.3% to 0.4% compared to a simple manual-based calculation. Correlation with various external criteria (general health perception, level of functioning, depression) remained unchanged.</p><p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Ignoring the \"checklist misconception-effect\" would overestimate symptom load. {"title":"Adolescents' education and their diet recorded by 7-day food records.","authors":"Christophe Matthys, Stefaan De Henauw, Lea Maes, Dirk De Bacquer, Wim Verbeke, Guy De Backer","doi":"10.1007/s00038-005-0019-3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s00038-005-0019-3","url":null,"abstract":"<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>To investigate associations between dietary habits and socio-economic status in adolescents (Ghent, Belgium).</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>A random sample of 341 adolescents (13-18 years) participated in a dietary survey using a 7-day dietary record. Respondents' educational training (general/vocational) and parental education were used as indicators of socio-economic status.</p><p><strong>Results: </strong>In girls, the prevalence of overweight is higher when following vocational training or having a low parental education; the energy and micronutrient intake was higher in respondents with a general training and in those with a high parental education. Girls following a general training have significantly higher intake of fruit, vegetables, breakfast cereals, cheese and milk & milk products, while their intake was significantly lower for soft drinks. Girls with a high parental education have a higher intake of cake, biscuits, milk & milk products. In boys, small differences in micronutrient and food intake were found between different educational levels.
