Aim: This study aims to identify the motivation for having a cochlear implant (CI) and the positive and negative aspects of that electronic hearing device from the perspective of its adult users, who have lost hearing postlingually. Material and methods: The study involved postlingually deaf adults with one or two CI’s. Participants received questionnaires by post. The response rate was 39%, which means that 90 persons responded (including 49 women and 41 men), aged 24 to 80 years ( M = 57.5; SD = 12.8). Study participants responded (retrospectively) to three questions included in the questionnaire concerning their reasoning for cochlear implantation and the positive and negative sides of that device. Responses underwent qualitative analysis using the Content Analysis method. Results: It came out, concerning the motivation of the CI decision, that most replies referred to „loss of hearing” (15%), „wanting to hear” (15%), and „social sphere” (14%) that encompasses relationships and communication with others in everyday life, in family and social life. Among the positive sides of CI, most often indicated was the ability to „receive sounds from the environment and hearing speech” (25%), then „understanding speech and communicating” (16%), and being able to participate in social relationships (15%). There were also many replies referring to the improvement of the quality of life (10%) and psychological functioning (10%). Nearly three-fourths of study participants could see no negative sides of CI (71.5%); others most frequently point out technical and organization limitations (23%), medical (8%), and limits of auditory perception, that is, difficulties with understanding speech and communicating in noise and difficult listening conditions (8%). Conclusions: The results confirm the importance of cochlear implant(s) in the lives of postlingually deaf CI users, especially in terms of the auditory perception of speech and environmental sounds, communication with other people, and social relationships. However, it should be noted that in the group of people who lost hearing after having acquired speech and language, there are significant differences in perception of positive and negative sides of a cochlear implant and motivations underlying the decision about having cochlear implantation.","PeriodicalId":214555,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Audiofonologia","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131660299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This would allow to focus rehabilitation effort on children, who are at risk of spoken language development failure. Material and methods: We carried out a retrospective cohort analysis investigating whether carrying certain variants in the genes encoding matrix metalloproteinase MMP9 and neurotrophin BDNF, key players in synaptic plasticity, can be taken as prognostic marker of auditory development. In the analyzed group of 121 children we assessed the presence of genetic variants of rs3918242 of MMP9 and rs6265 of BDNF and the results were associated with auditory development measurements with LittlEARS Questionnaire (LEAQ) before implant activation and at 1, 5, 9, 14 and 24 months after CI activation. All enrolled children were diagnosed with congenital deafness and unilaterally implanted before the age of 2 years. Results: Statistical analysis showed significant association between MMP9 rs3918242 and LEAQ scores at 24 months after CI activation and between BDNF rs6265 and LEAQ score at 5 months after CI activation. In the subgroup implanted after 1 year of life significant associations between MMP9 rs3918242 and LEAQ scores were observed in all, but 14th month, follow up intervals. No significant associations were identified in the subgroup implanted before 1 year of life. Conclusions: In summary, carriers of the C/C genotype rs3918242 MMP9 may respond better to cochlear implantation, by reaching higher LEAQ scores, than carriers of the C/T genotype rs3918242 MMP9.","PeriodicalId":214555,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Audiofonologia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128397879","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents results of the assessment of six children with language developmental disorders aged 9–12 years. A diagnosis of the children’s functioning in terms of specific language abilities and broader cognitive and socio-emotional functioning was conducted. Case report: The study used clinical samples on narrative speech, verbal fluency, comprehension, grammar, and auditory memory of phonemes. The Matrix Reasoning Test from the WAIS-IV battery was used to assess non-verbal intellectual abilities. The range of symptoms of emotional and behavioral disorders in the examined children was assessed using the CBCL questionnaire. The diagnosis revealed difficulties in language comprehension as well as in active speech. The examined children have difficulties with naming, verbal fluency, they commit grammatical errors. As far as comprehension is concerned, the children have difficulties with syntax and with correct understanding of a complex instructions. Comprehension problems may be related to the limited short term auditory memory that was also revealed in the diagnosis. Symptoms of emotional and behavioral disorders were also found, which are most likely a consequence of the experienced communication difficulties. Conclusions: The results of the clinical study indicate the need for multilevel diagnostic and therapeutic management that includes support for language development, as well as psychological interventions to support the emotional functioning of children with SLI.","PeriodicalId":214555,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Audiofonologia","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128608870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hearing screenings for school-age children help detect educationally significant hearing loss and prevent negative effects on academic achievement. Aim of the study was estimation of the prevalence of hearing disorders in school-aged children from rural areas in Poland. Material and methods: Participants in the study were 44 323 children (21 169 girls and 23 154 boys) aged 6 to 9 years from 4 414 schools in rural areas of Poland. The air conduction hearing threshold for frequencies 0.5–8 kHz was determined. Hearing screening was performed using the Sensory Testing Platform. In addition, parents completed an audiological questionnaire. Results: An abnormal screening result was found in 19.5% of the children tested. Most of the hearing loss was unilateral, i.e. 63.6%. Only 14% of parents noticed a hearing problem in their child. Conclusions: The paper presents estimates of tonal audiometry screening in Polish children from rural areas. It was shown that hearing problems are common in this population. The study has important implications for clinical practice and health policy. It indi-cates the need of systematic monitoring of hearing condition in children and increasing parents’ and educators’ awareness of importance of hearing loss. Further studies among children from urban areas are needed to compare the prevalence of hearing loss in children from different backgrounds.","PeriodicalId":214555,"journal":{"name":"Nowa Audiofonologia","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124285648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
