METHODS: The Simon task, administered individually on a laptop computer using the e-prime software, was used to measure aspects related to executive functions through a control condition and two test conditions. In the control condition, the stimuli - colored squares - were presented in the center of the screen. Test conditions were subdivided into congruent lateral condition - stimuli presented on the same side of the screen as the laptop key to be selected as the correct response - and lateral incongruent condition - in which the stimuli appear on the opposite side of the screen relative to the response key. The difference in reaction time between congruent and incongruent conditions is called Simon effect. The elderly were divided into three groups: a control group of normal hearing individuals; individuals with presbycusis who use hearing aids; and individuals with presbycusis who do not use hearing aids. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed difference between the control group and the group of non-hearing aid users only with regards to the reaction time (RT) in the control condition. In the other comparisons, no differences were found. CONCLUSION: The hypothesis was not corroborated, which indicates the need to use new exploratory methods for observing the studied phenomena.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"151-155"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67595153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Participants were 24 obese individuals with ages between 8 and 15 years, who participated in the Obesity Group of the Ambulatory of Pediatrics of an University Hospital, and were selected by convenience. The myofunctional characteristics were assessed using the Orofacial Myofunctional Assessment with Scales (Avaliacao Miofuncional Orofacial com Escalas - AMIOFE) protocol. RESULTS: Oral breathing was present in 62.5%, and nasal breathing in 37.5% of the population studied. In the oral breathing group, 40% of the subjects presented lips tension during occlusion and 80% showed a narrow palate, while almost all nasal breathers had normal palate and lips posture (p<0.05). Interposition of the tongue in the dental arches occurred in 47% of oral breathers and none of the nasal breathers. Oral breathers showed the tendency not to repeat the swallowing of the same bolus. No difference was found between groups regarding face appearance, jaw posture, cheeks, and chewing function. CONCLUSION: Oral breathing in obese children and adolescents was accompanied by myofunctional alterations of the stomatognathic system, represented by narrow palate, interposition of the tongue in the dental arches, occlusion of the lips with tension, and swallowing disorders.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"10 1","pages":"171-176"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67595220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS:Seventy seven individuals with ages between 19 and 57 years were distributed into two groups: 51 students from a radio training course - TG (trained group); and 26 subjects with no voice and speech training - UnTG (untrained group). Individuals read a radio report twice, emphasizing two different words in each reading: \"negotiates\" and \"reforms\". The readings were recorded with an interval of two months between them, which corresponded to the beginning and end of the radio training course attended by the TG. Voice samples were submitted to: auditory-perceptual analysis of the occurrence, evaluation and use of emphasis; visual analysis of the spectrographic trace for delimitation of the pauses; acoustic analysis of the duration and fundamental frequency of the emphases. Results were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The TG had higher grades than the UnTG regarding the quality of emphasis use, and there was no difference in its occurrence and use. The word \"reforms\" had higher occurrence of emphasis and was better evaluated than the word \"negotiates\". The TG used less pauses than the UnTG. Acoustic analysis showed that the word \"reforms\" was longer than \"negotiates\" in the UnTG. The mean fundamental frequency was higher for \"negotiates\". CONCLUSION: Both groups demonstrated that the use of emphasis accompanies the individuality of speakers. The TG had better ability in the distribution of pauses. The words were distinctly emphasized due to syntactic and semantic aspects.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"216-224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67595460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Participants were 14 deaf subjects, of both genders, with ages between 8 and 13 years, students of third and fourth grades of Elementary School at a special school for deaf children, who were users of the Brazilian Sign Language. They were assessed by means of written productions based on two types of stimuli: a short sequence of four pictures, and a picture of an action. Each production was scored according to criteria adapted from the Communicative Competences theory (Generic, Encyclopedic and Linguistic). RESULTS: In the analysis of the Generic Competence, no difference was found between the written productions based on the sequence of pictures or on the picture of an action. However, the picture of an action provided more narrative productions, whereas the sequence of pictures elicited more descriptive productions. Regarding the Encyclopedic and the Linguistic Competences, both visual stimuli provided similar results in written production. Both in the Linguistic and Encyclopedic Competences, the performance of the subjects was lower than expected for the level of education, demonstrating partial knowledge regarding the written Portuguese language. Nevertheless, it was observed that the sequence of pictures allowed a bit more elaborated organization of ideas and overall cohesion. CONCLUSION: None of the visual stimuli, whether sequence of pictures or picture of an action, provided better performance in the written production of deaf signers without complaints of writing impairments, for most of the aspects analyzed.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"208-215"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000200018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67595371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
