METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 12 adults with audiometric thresholds <15 dBHL (24 ears) and mean age of 27 years. The parameters used for the recording with both stimuli in intensities of 80, 60, 40, 20 dBnHL were alternate polarity and repetition rate of 27.1 Hz. RESULTS: The CE-chirp® latencies for wave V were longer than click latencies at low intensity levels (20 and 40 dBnHL). At high intensity levels (60 and 80 dBnHL), the opposite occurred. Larger wave V amplitudes were observed with CE-chirp® in all intensity levels, except at 80 dBnHL. CONCLUSION: The CE-chirp® showed shorter latencies than those observed with clicks at high intensity levels and larger amplitudes at all intensity levels, except at 80 dBnHL. The waves I and III tended to disappear with CE-chirp® stimulation.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"412-416"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67596739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monitoring the case by regular evaluations adds important information to the diagnosis, which allows strengthening the initial findings with regards to the underlying deficits identified in the initial evaluation. The aim of this case report was to verify the effectiveness and the efficiency in using the Percentage of Consonants Correct - Revised (PCC-R) index as well as complementary tests of speech inconsistency, stimulability and phonological awareness skills in monitoring therapeutic intervention in children with speech sound disorders. The study included three male children. At the time of initial evaluation, Case 1 was 6 years and 9 months old, Case 2, 8 years and 10 months old, and Case 3, 9 years and 7 months old. In addition to the specific assessment of phonology, complementary tests were used to help in verifying the underlying deficits for each specific case. Subjects were also evaluated on phonological awareness abilities, speech inconsistency and speech stimulability. Data analysis confirmed that the complementary tests selected for this case study were effective and efficient to complement initial diagnostic as well as to demonstrate modifications that occurred in the three subjects with speech sound disorders.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"469-475"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400018","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67597261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: The sample comprised 2880 children of both genders from low, middle and high socioeconomic levels enrolled in public schools from Salvador, with ages ranging from 4 years to 6 years and 11 months. Initially, all children were individually screened for speech-language and hearing disorders. Moreover, an anamnesis was conducted with caregivers/parents, and teachers answered to an interview. After that, a phonological assessment and a contrastive analysis were conducted, in order to diagnose children with phonological disorders. The prevalence of phonological disorder was calculated, and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: The prevalence of speech disorders was 9.17%. It was verified a higher prevalence of phonological disorders for male subjects. In addition, when genders were associated to the variables \"age\" and \"socioeconomic status\", the prevalence varied statistically. CONCLUSION: Biological and social factors might influence the acquisition of phonological skills of oral language. Prevention measures and actions directed to identifying and treating phonological disorders should consider the different classes of socioeconomic development.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"441-446"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400013","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67597528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Participants in this prospective and cross-sectional study were 21 subjects aged between 5 years and 2 months and 7 years and 9 months with speech sound disorder. Subjects were grouped according to the presence of otitis media history: experimental group 1 (EG1) with 14 subjects with otitis media history and experimental group 2 (EG2) with seven subjects without otitis media history. The amount of speech errors (distortions, omissions and substitutions) and the articulation indexes were calculated. Data were submitted to statistical analysis. RESULTS: The performances from EG1 and EG2 regarding the indexes were different from each other in both phonological tasks applied. In all analyzes, the indexes evaluating substitutions indicated that this type of error was the most prevalent in children with speech sound disorders. CONCLUSION: The use of indexes was effective to indicate that substitution is the most prevalent type of error in children with speech sound disorders. The greater occurrence of speech errors observed in the picture naming task in children with otitis media history indicates that such errors are possibly associated to difficulties in phonological representation secondary to fluctuating conductive hearing loss.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"422-429"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400010","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67596889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 25 premature and full-term newborns from women who were crack and/or cocaine users were compared with another group composed of 25 newborns without the studied factor. The evaluations of the oral and general sensory motor system were carried out by the Instrument to Assess the Readiness of Preterm Infants for Oral Feeding and by the Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP). The results compared the scores obtained in both scales and their relation to the use of crack and/or cocaine during pregnancy. RESULTS: No significant difference was found by the TIMP when comparing the newborns from crack and/or cocaine-using mothers to the ones from non-using mothers. The results from the Instrument to Assess the Readiness of Preterm Infants for Oral Feeding showed statistic significance. A significant relation between the results from babies who presented delay in the TIMP to the lowest score in the Instrument to Assess the Readiness of Preterm Infants for Oral Feeding was observed. CONCLUSION: The low performance observed in the Instrument to Assess the Readiness of Preterm Infants for Oral Feeding suggests that the oral motor responses are altered by the use of drugs during the pregnancy. The significant correlation between both instruments shows that the development of the oral sensory motor system is directly related to the general motor development.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"459-463"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400016","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67597518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

METHODS: This consisted on a cross-sectional study composed by 34 dyads: 18 in rooming and 16 in intermediate/medium care units of a public hospital. Each dyad was observed at the time of breastfeeding, and data were analyzed considering the aspects standardized by UNICEF for breastfeeding. Verbal and nonverbal communication modes were observed. RESULTS: Comparison of variables showed significant associations between hospital environment and the position of the mother in relation to the newborn and mother stimulation and vocalization to the neonate, with favorable percentage for the dyad that was in rooming. The other variables did not differ. CONCLUSION: Important conditions for the establishment of breastfeeding and communication between mother and newborn are influenced by the location of the dyad, especially the hospital environment.","PeriodicalId":21204,"journal":{"name":"Revista Da Sociedade Brasileira De Fonoaudiologia","volume":"17 1","pages":"464-468"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1590/S1516-80342012000400017","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67597615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
