Most signals dealt with in engineering are electrical signals and although tools such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers are available, many students struggle to comprehend the basic concepts. By dealing with acoustic signals, combined with appropriate visual displays of the signal spectra, the sequence of experiments described in this paper provides students with a useful learning experience. The concepts covered, including spectral analysis, the affects of noise on a communications channel, and aliasing, are ones that students frequently find different to grasp. Dealing with audible signals makes these concepts more concrete. The required facilities are available in the modern multimedia computer.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. IWALT 2000. The discovery of errors is a pattern matching task where a candidate attempt is synchronised with the model answer. The classification of the errors consists of applying sets of rules to regions of a candidate answer corresponding to regions of the model solution. A particular constraint in this type of assessment is that the results should be similar to those which would be produced by a human examiner. This paper describes the algorithms the authors have used in automating a number of assessors for the use of word processors, spreadsheets and databases and describes some of the problems of applying such algorithms in practice.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. To improve this course and to aid the understanding of the essence of computer programming, we developed a new teaching method named Program Reading Practice. Program Reading Practice adopts an interactive lecture style, while simultaneously using a Training Kit Program based on computer graphics animation named WinTK. Students read the source codes of these programs, which are designed for attracting their interest. Then the teacher shows the visual subject or graphic animation on the teacher's instruction screen and instructs students to rewrite (i.e., modify or extend) a similar source code. Students thus have to read source codes carefully and to modify or extend these after repeated trials and errors. Because WinTK includes the framework of graphics programming, students can concentrate on the technical subject. Thus they acquire a method to construct computer programs in many ways. We have used this practice for five years, and we are convinced of the positive effect of the Program Reading Practice.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies. At present, these partners, i.e. the teacher, the program developer, and the domain specialist, are surprised by all the possibilities offered by this new synergy. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator reflects a person's personality rather than just a preferred learning style and provides a useful tool for investigating how different learners develop learning strategies. The paper goes on to describe an experiment which shows the MBTI to be useful when investigating learner behaviours in an online learning scenario. The paper concludes by outlining issues that should be considered when adopting MBTI in this type of investigation.","PeriodicalId":208449,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Workshop on Advanced Learning Technologies.
