I proceed by attending to what I take to be a particular interpretive hard case, namely, the Swedish author and activist Sara Lidman’s (1923-2004) notion of “sam-vett”. Or more precisely: I attend to one specific usage of that word, namely the male protagonist Didrik Mårtensson’s usage of the word in Lidman’s novel Järnkronan (1985). Lidman invented the word “sam-vett” in the early 1980s but never defined it; she simply put it to use in various texts and contexts. By comparing how the problematic nature of “sam-vett” presents itself for Didrik in Järnkronan, with the Wittgensteinian philosopher Cora Diamond’s notion of “the difficulty of reality”, I argue that Lidman’s “sam-vett” – in this specific usage – expresses an experience of encountering something ineffable. In my comparative reading I argue that rather than offering a road to a more-than-human communality and knowledge beyond words, however, Didrik’s usage of “sam-vett” expresses a fantasy of being able to escape a guilty conscience through the letting go of sanity and sense-making altogether. So, while Didrik encounters “a difficulty of reality” that shoulders him out (at least partially) from language his attempt at imagining a non-linguistic pan-species community in the name of “sam-vett” nevertheless fails. Instead, Didrik’s “sam-vett” becomes something of a false idol, a delirious idea that only appears to make sense.","PeriodicalId":202881,"journal":{"name":"Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap","volume":"316 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132155402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our point of departure is a problem with competence maintenance within the subject of comparative literature in relation to teacher education. We address areas such as collaboration between comparative literature and literature in education and the role of thehumanities in the Swedish educational system. Previous publications on the relationship between comparative literature and literature in education, as well as interviews with active researchers, form the basis for a case study in which we do an overview of ways to acquire competence in literature in education. The context consists of local strategies, visions and perceptions of competence, as well as UKÄ’s (Swedish Higher Education Authority) national evaluations of subject teacher education in Swedish. Our results demonstrate that the fields have moved closer to each other in different ways, and we suggest that increased collaboration between comparative literature and literature in education would be mutualy beneficial and that the specific expertise of both fields together would strengthen the role of teaching literature and the subject of Swedish in schools and teacher training. The results also indicate that it is crucial for literary scholars to approach issues related to literature in education in their research. A more literature-oriented didactic is needed when teaching future teachers to strengthen the students’ literary competence and raise questions about the meaning and function of literature – and humanities – in schools. The future professionalism (faglighet) of teachers in literary studies and literature in education should therefore focus on what unites the fields and be open to each other’s specific research competencies. Increased cooperation can contribute to strengthening the role of the humanities and Bildung in schools, above all by clarifying its importance for the future teachers that we teach.","PeriodicalId":202881,"journal":{"name":"Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116887366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The format accordingly impacts how many contemporary readers use and experience literature. The article examines this tendency, departing from Rita Felski’s theoretical conceptualizations of uses of literature (Felski 2008). Felski represents a new attention within literary studies toward the ways in which so-called lay readers use, experience and form attachments (Felski 2020) to literature and art. Drawing on Felski’s work in combination with Lutz Koepnick’s concept of resonant reading (2019), we study how the medial affordances of the audiobook impact uses of literature among empirical Swedish readers. In this way, we combine the theoretical perspective introduced by Felski with an approach informed by literary sociology (Svedjedal, Murray), in order to draw attention to the importance of considering the significance of media and formats in broader discussions about uses of literature. The article is based on a survey of 1400 Swedish audiobook users, which was published during the fall of 2021, in the Facebook-group Snacka om ljudböcker. We focus on a qualitative analysis of answers to the free-text question “Why do you choose to listen to audiobooks?” Our findings demonstrate that the medial affordances of the audiobook, its mobility and the mediation of literature through sound, impact both why and how readers listen to audiobooks: Respondents report among other things that audiobooks make it possible to integrate literature into everyday life, and that, consequently, it adds value to everyday activities, while the format’s mediation though sound, and especially the voice of the performer “adds a dimension” and “deepens” the reading experience. Thus, while the existing debate often associates audiobooks with distracted or passive reading and, in Felski’s terms, with detachment from the surroundings, and from the text, our findings suggest that the format also helps readers form attachments to and through literature.","PeriodicalId":202881,"journal":{"name":"Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122056942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
