This talk will cover the experimental and theoretical work that has been conducted in the Micro/Nanoscale Thermal Science Laboratory at ISU on phonon energy transport in graphene and novel approaches to manipulating/tailoring it to meet the need in energy applications. For phonon transport, the research is focused on the dynamic transient response of graphene to thermal impulse to reveal the phonon energy coupling and the distinctive behavior of the three phonon modes in transferring energy. For graphene applications, the phonon behavior across the structure-bent area is studied in detail to reveal the local mode- conservation and evaluate the local bending resistance. The energy transport in graphene- substrate interfaces is studied by combined experiment and modeling to understand the local energy dissipation that will be involved in graphene-based nanoelectronics. Our most recent work has made two new discoveries about energy manipulation in graphene: 1) the phonon energy can be inversed mode-wide to achieve energy separation, conversion, and ps-scale energy storage, 2) through careful phonon manipulation, graphene can conduct heat in two opposite directions simultaneously, proposing a novel way for energy conversion in space.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132399416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Rich features available in modern desktop operating systems - such as threads, memory management, and exception-handling - are largely absent. The Microsoft .NET Micro Framework implements a scaled-back .NET framework suitable for development on low-cost, low-power wireless sensors, while providing developers a rapid software development environment for prototyping embedded applications. Here, this technology is explored by comparing performance characteristics with those of traditional 8-bit platforms, as well as Sun SPOT, a popular platform that also uses a managed-language runtime. The .NET Micro Framework platform was found to offer researchers the most flexibility in terms of hardware and software prototyping.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124841460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No strong reflection is expected from a single layer of continuous TiO2 film. In this work, we report the unusually high reflection from a thick layer of TiO2 nanoparticles. TiO2 nanoparticles of different sizes (~ 21 nm and ~ 400 nm) were deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrate by electrophoretic process in atmosphere. It was observed that the film characteristics such as morphology and thickness were affected by the electrophoretic process conditions like voltage, deposition time, and electrolyte concentration. The electrolyte had the most significant effect on the deposition rate of the nanoparticles. The film thickness was proportional to the deposition time, which in turn determined the diffused reflectance of the TiO2 particle films. It was observed that the 400 nm TiO2 nanoparticle films lead to much stronger light scattering as compared to the 21 nm particles. The diffuse reflectance was compared to sputtering deposited Ag/ZnO back reflectors that are used in thin film solar cells. The TiO2 nanoparticle film showed higher reflectance, making it a potential candidate to replace the unstable Ag/ZnO back reflector.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121115679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The texture characteristics of back reflectors have strong effects on solar cell efficiency. While average peak height and roughness are directly available from atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis, several key parameters are missing. These parameters include average peak angle, peak angle distribution, and peak height distribution. This work demonstrates a numerical scheme to quantify these texture parameters. To do this, we developed a program that calculates the peak height and angle from the original AFM data. The output results establish quantitative relationship between the back reflector process parameters and the texture characteristics.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124625152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analyzing the characteristic of handwritten digits, this paper proposes a new handwritten digital identification method based on combining structural features. Given a handwritten digit, a variety of structural features of the digit including end points, bifurcation points, horizontal lines and so on are identified automatically and robustly by a proposed extended structural features identification algorithm and a decision tree based on those structural features are constructed to support automatic recognition of the handwritten digit. Experimental result demonstrates that the proposed method is superior to other general methods in recognition rate and robustness.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122458723","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, in this paper, we propose a semiotic, inductive, and approximate approach to ontology creation. We define a conceptual framework, a semantics extraction algorithm, and a first proof of concept applying the algorithm to a small set of Wikipedia documents. Intended as an extension to the prevailing top-down ontologies, we introduce an inductive fuzzy grassroots ontology, which organizes itself organically from existing natural language Web content. Using inductive and approximate reasoning to reflect the natural way in which knowledge is processed, the ontology's bottom-up build process creates emergent semantics learned from the Web. By this means, the ontology acts as a hub for computing with words described in natural language. For Web users, the structural semantics are visualized as inductive fuzzy cognitive maps, allowing an initial form of intelligence amplification. Eventually, we present an implementation of our inductive fuzzy grassroots ontology. Thus, this paper contributes an algorithm for the extraction of fuzzy grassroots ontologies from Web data by inductive fuzzy classification.","PeriodicalId":201202,"journal":{"name":"IEEE International Conference on Electro-Information Technology , EIT 2013","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128365711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
