Diagnosed as schizophrenic, Wolfson developed a deep hatred for his mother tongue, English, and a strong mistrust toward others and the world in general. In order to protect himself, he learned French, Russian, German, and Hebrew, languages which he then uses to translate his anglophone environment. Taking a cue from Caroline Rabourdin’s writings that show how the logic of Euclidian space forms and informs our linguistic identity – what she calls incarnated bilingualism – we understand how Wolfson’s space is organized by a different logic, non-binary and structured according to his plurilingual translations. For Deleuze and Guattari, Wolfson’s system follows lines of flight and functions based on a reformulation of space similar to the rhizome: non- hierarchical and non-signifying. With Wolfson, the nomad replaces the flaneur, and word play and polysemy replace signification, creating a constantly translated space, one that is finally, but temporarily, livable.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"7 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116803299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In The Human Comedy, metallic money plays a decisive role in the financial transactions that take place between the characters. But the role of paper money is just as significant. The coexistence of metal and paper conveys the idea of a multifaceted vitality of wealth and that of a multiple relationship to the materiality of money. Captured in its mass or in its apparent insignificance, Balzacian money becomes a sensory element, a fetish that triggers desire. Dissociated from its exchange value, the monetary object comes to life and turns paradoxically into a symbol of contestation of the economic order.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121173158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sandu","doi":"10.7202/1101620ar","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7202/1101620ar","url":null,"abstract":"This article examines a contemporary illustration of the journal d ’écrivain en temps de crise (writers’ diaries in times of crisis) through a series of articles published online in the magazine Télérama at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and entitled: Journal de confinement [Lockdown Diary] (March 23– April 10, 2020). In my analysis, I address writing strategies and topics specific to this particular form of diary: the pathos of sadness; the authors’ status as connaisseurs and observers; writing shaped by a proliferation of flashbacks and cultural references; the topos of a daily life viewed as a spectacle; a new perspective on the time-space relation, one where temporality becomes subservient to spatiality (since the diarists concentrate essentially upon intimate space). Textual analysis of the corpus shows a significant change in what is considered as a primary factor leading to the writing of a journal: the legitimate will for isolation articulated by lonely, “rétractile” writers. As proven by the authors of the Télérama articles, in times of crisis a writer’s diary testifies to the authors’ will to expand their perspectives, and their acute, conscious perceptions of the surrounding space.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124688874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this novel, the imagination of the 15-year-old autodiegetic narrator constantly wanders between two spaces opposed in their function: her bourgeois house protected from the violent killings occurring outside the walls, and the enclosed space of a prison cell termed “the tiger cage,” in which she spends seventeen months. It is in this space of incarceration that the story takes shape through multiple flashbacks. The constant back and forth between two spaces, one welcoming and the other hostile, which the young prisoner explores so obsessively, merge into a single place at the time of the unexpected ending of the story. The confusion following the merging of the two separate spaces occurs in particular when the reader discovers the allusion to what happened in the life of the young girl at her home until her imprisonment. In this study, I will employ thematic analysis to highlight how and why this prison space becomes a place of introspection, one which will paradoxically save the protagonist from her isolation relative to the outside world by becoming a way of escaping from her inner abyss.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134563823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Storytelling is valuable for individuals in later life as a means of reflecting on their past, addressing past and present challenges, connecting with others, sharing invaluable insight with younger generations and acquiring a renewed sense of worth through the process. Focusing on the story of Merle, an aged care resident who for a year and a half shared her story with the author while confined to a room of her own, the article explores the specific impact of the storytelling process as it plays out for both the teller and the listener. While doing so the article suggests that life stories like Merle’s, that convey perspectives, experiences and knowledge from a time that is no longer, might have a place within and provide a worthwhile resource for the field of literary studies including the study of the spatial dimension.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123898560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Villon studies have thus been shifted away from the poetry, following a tendency in modern criticism due partly to the pervasive influence of Sainte-Beuve who, as Proust remarked, reads all poetry as if it were anecdotal prose. Even with the errors revealed since 1967, editors of Villon have persisted in clinging to this tendency, with dire results for the reading of all our poetry.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129335449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Le Clézio and Jacques Derrida’s limitrophic deconstruction of what is commonly referred to as the “genesis myth” in Judeo-Christian society. In addition to Cartesian dichotomies and debunked notions of human exceptionalism originating from Renaissance humanism, the Franco-Mauritian writer and Pied-noir philosopher take aim at the mainstream interpretation of Abrahamic cosmogonic narratives that have created a sharp ontological gap between Homo sapiens and other animals. Le Clézio and Derrida describe the genesis account of human-animal relations as an ecocidal, conflictual relationship that could be labeled a world war. They demonstrate that our dominant cognitive structures including the “genesis myth” that mostly remain uncontested, at least within the general public, have already left behind a path of irreversible destruction and other-than-human suffering. Unless we are able to curb the unending fury that the animal within us has unleashed against other sentient beings who bleed, suffer, live, and die just like us, Le Clézio and Derrida lament that our days are numbered.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123982022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing mainly on the definition of the mise en scène in Patrice Pavis’ Dictionnaire du théâtre (1996) and Dominique Maingueneau’s concepts of authority and enunciative vocation in discourse analysis, this article first identifies elements of interpretation belonging to the textual and the literal stages, as well as how they arrange and organize each space. We then show how the textual and literal mise en scène, that is, the arrangement and organization of elements of interpretation, prescribes a discourse that is unique to each space, thereby constraining the dancer to present themselves within specific identity parameters. Ultimately, this article argues that the dancer who presents herself both on the literal and textual stages cannot but present two different images of herself because she must use the distinct discursive and interpretive tools that are made available to her in each space.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"356 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122805152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This very particular kind of writing is experienced only during the act of writing and its journey is realized in the book. This is the place where the writer can come back to the link between his being as a writer and the human being whom he has encountered all along the way. This reveals a process of spatialization of writing through the book, in particular the insertion of the reader, the reaction of the writer to this complete whole that he does not dominate and the relationship between them that takes place there.","PeriodicalId":200386,"journal":{"name":"L’espace à travers l’imaginaire littéraire","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122088273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
