The “Mahabharata” is an epic written in both the Tamil and Sanskrit languages. The story of Karna is one of the sub plots in this epic. In the Greek play, Creusa who is impregnated by Apollo, the Sun God, keeps Ion in a casket together with a breast plate for his protection. In the Tamil myth, Kunti who is impregnated by the Sun God places her son Karna in a casket and sets it afloat in a river to conceal the birth of the child. Regarding the breast plate in this story, it is shown that Karna was born with the breast plate glued to his breast. Creusa, the mother of Ion, had had an illegitimate son born to her before marriage and remains childless for a long time after getting married to another person. Kunti too gave birth to a son before marriage and remains childless for a long time with her lawful husband. After that, Creusa had offspring by the grace of the God and Kunti too had offspring by the boon of the Gods. Thus, the parallels of binary oppositions and deconstruction are seen in these two myths. Noble birth and low birth, men and women, willing and out of compulsion, happiness and unhappiness are some of the binary oppositions. Theism and Atheism, biological mother and step mother are some of the deconstructions of binary opposition. This article deals with the parallels seen between these two myths, identifying the binary oppositions in these myths and deconstructing the binary oppositions by identifying their instabilities. This view has been so overwhelming that it has ousted other possibilities, as a result, the influence of medieval literature has been grossly underestimated. In the current article I want to show the role of the “dream vision” genre in shaping the modern genre of spiritual philosophical fiction elaborated in the works by C.S. Lewis, specifically in his exceptionally original novel The Great Divorce. The aim is to examine systematically and expose the intrinsic affinity of Lewis’ work with the ground breaking works of the father of the genre, a French Cistercian monk Guillaume de Deguileville (1295-1358). Separated by time and culture, the works display a remarkable congruity of both form and content including the narrative structure, themes and motifs, allegorical representations and symbolism. The discovered similarities are not accidental because they draw upon the same epistemological position concerning understanding and interpretation of essential properties of the Christian doctrine. At the same time, it makes efforts to uncover how to meet the needs for it. One hundred medical students took part in the research and they were asked to answer questionnaires purposefully designed, so as to collect comprehensive data with regard to the use of medical English corpus. The results of the current research has shown that there is a strong need of use of medical English corpus among contemporary Chinese college medical students as well as a severe lack of guidance of it from medical teachers in Chinese medical universities. Thus, this research further suggests that medical teachers should also guide medical students to meet the needs of selecting proper medical English corpus sensibly in their language learning practice. This was the law that, when E.M. Forster was sixteen, sent Oscar Wilde to prison. This situation had a profound impact upon Forster, leading him to conceal his sexual orientation for the remainder of his life. So, although Forster wrote Maurice, a novel about a romantic relationship between two men, in 1913, he withheld its publication until after his death. After abandoning Maurice, Forster—previously a prolific novelist—lapsed into a decade-long silence that finally ended with the publication of his final novel, A Passage to India, in 1924. Critics conventionally discuss A Passage to India in relation to such central and recurring themes in Forster’s canon as the tension between social classes, racial conflict under British Colonialism, and the limitations of conventional gender roles. Yet, A Passage to India also specially reimagines, reconfigures, and sublimates the overtly homosexual novel that Forster could not publish in his lifetime. The ghost of Maurice haunts A Passage to India, determining such elements as its portrayals of relationships (platonic, romantic, or merely complicated) between men and its depictions of women as upholders of social conventions, catalysts to the breakdown of male relationships, and secret keepers. A Passage to India, then, is a palimpsest of Maurice, a story of colonial India written over the erasure of an openly gay love story but with subtle traces of the original remaining. Keywords: E.M. Their poetic opuses introduced a specific Lorcan poetics of surrealism into Croatian poetry, merging it with the Croatian tradition of Mediterraneanism (thematization of Mediterranean landscape images and symbols). The “Lenten Triodion” is one of the collections compiled by George the Athonite (1009-1065). He was thoroughly acquainted with the Byzantine and Georgian theological writings. The main principle of his epochal activity was maximum approach of the earlier Georgian translations to the Greek originals. In collections translated from Greek, he tried to show the modern Byzantine liturgical practice in full. The same principle is used in “Lenten Triodion” under his redaction. This is one of the most important liturgical–hymnographic books in Christian church, containing numerous hymns for Great Lent. “Lenten Triodion” under George the Athonite’s redaction is much more extensive than its contemporary Greek analogues. The significance of this collection for the study of Byzantine hymnography is determined by the work done by George the Athonite for identification of the authors of the hymns preserved in it. This collection preserves translations of the hymns of 14 Byzantine poet-melodists of the 5th - 10th centuries. Most of them are well known in scholarly literature, but a significant part of the hymns of the same authors whose originals are not present in the famous scholarly literature are preserved in this collection. The academic edition of this collection according to the nine ancient Georgian manuscripts is prepared by the group of Georgian scholars and its electronic version will be placed on the Internet. The first approach considers Euripides a (mis-) reader of Homer. The dramatist regards an epic passage as the reference text, but fails to understand its wording correctly: therefore, he uncritically reproduces the model, even though inspired by a genuine impulse to emulate; this circumstance de facto equates the tragedian with a sort of exegete and represents his deviation from the epic text as the locus of an implicit (erroneous) interpretation. The second approach evaluates the work of Euripides, comparing it with the Homeric poems, by means and in the light of concepts of literary criticism. The tragedian creates a good or bad product depending on whether his innovation achieves a certain poetic result: an implausible or unrealistic description of a character is contested, whereas a strategy to enhance the emotional impact of the dramatic moment is recognised and perceived as a careful and conscious artistic operation, hence possibly praised. Moreover, teachers do not use them sufficiently. The oral language should gain more ground because communication uses speech more than writing. Each language has its phonetic, phonological and prosodic system. These features become important during a foreign language learning process, since the learner tends to assimilate the foreign sound to the sounds of his/her mother tongue because 1) his/her ear is not able to distinguish them, and 2) the brain couples the sound with the written sign. By following a traditional methodology, students achieve an adequate level in constructing correct sentences, but their oral performance remains poor. New technologies help students to practice the new sounds more precisely, thus, provoking the muscle of the phonetic apparatus to become so stretched to be able to produce them easily. Talking in a new language is the equivalent of making a physical exercise; it is a question not only of new commands received by the brain, but also of a flexible vocal tract. It is a physical, psychological and mental process, which, considering Italian and English, becomes even more difficult, because the two alphabets have more or less the same written signs (a,b,c, d, t, etc.). Rather, if we consider an Italian student of Arabic the problems are different for two reasons: 1) the letters, having different shape, avoid overlapping, so that the student 2) has only to develop the muscles for the emphatic and guttural letters (ع غ ص ض ط ظ). His/her mind has not the duty to cancel the sounds of the mother tongue and to substitute them with a new pronunciation. In this study, my challenge is to give much more emphasis to phonetics, phonology, stress and intonation, so to facilitate interaction during a speech act using real and not a limited classroom language. For these reasons, I planned a specific course in pronunciation, helped by spectrographs and laryngographs, for a separate group of students with the purpose to stress phonetics and phonology more than grammar. The results obtained after one year, at last, gave voice to my suppositions. {"title":"Greek, Latin, Sanskrit and Tamil: The Meaning of the Word Ἐρυθρὰν in Erythraean Sea","authors":"D. From the Greek word ἐρεύθων, it is thought that the sea is red in colour and so got its name, the Red Sea. There is also another thought that the name of the sea is not due to its colour, but the first person who crossed this sea was called Erythras, and so the sea is named after him. The research that has been done so far has taken into account the Greek and Persian language root to this word, but has not yet reached a final conclusion. Tamil Nadu also has a remarkable place in this connection. In the word Ἐρυθρὰν θάλατταν, “Ery” means “throw” both in Greek and Tamil and “thrae” means hair in Greek and “wave” in Tamil. The word “thrae” has a common meaning which is that of either a group, or in general any gathering of a small number of objects. Thus, Ἐρυθρὰν of Greek and Erythraeos of Latin has the meaning of ‘throwing ocean wave’ in Tamil. In studying the other word Περίπλους (Περί + πλους), of Περίπλους της Ερυθράς Θαλάσσης, the first part of the word, Περί, means big or long and the latter part of the word πλους, which is the metathesis of πόλεις has the meaning land or city. Thus the words Περίπλους της Ερυθράς Θαλάσσης has the meaning –“the cities or the lands of the ocean of throwing waves”. It is well known that both the Greeks and Romans had a flourishing sea trade with Tamil Nadu in the ancient period of history and there was ample possibility of words being borrowed from Tamil to Greek.
